Tibetan Buddhist Encyclopedia is now 14 years old

Our Encyclopedia recently received a wonderful opportunity for a major renewal on its 14th birthday . After many years of growing our Encyclopedia had become bit slow and sometimes even decided not to answer when people knocked on the door.

A very big thank you and blessings to Dmytro Rudiy (rudiy.nl) for his great work in upgrading the server, website and all of the infrastructure and helping make TBE fast and reliable again for everyone!

We kindly ask our readers to help us cover the cost of this important upgrade and also help with the ongoing costs of keeping the Encyclopedia alive and freely available.

Welcome to the Tibetan Buddhist Encyclopedia

The Tibetan Buddhist Encyclopedia is a free online library of the Buddha Dharma. Here you will find more than 93000+ entries on Buddhist teachings, Buddhist Terms, sutras, tantras, deities, teachers, monasteries, rituals, art, history and philosophy, together with dictionaries of Tibetan, Sanskrit, Pali, Chinese and Zen terminology. Every article is linked to related articles and categories, so one subject leads naturally to the next.

How it began

The Encyclopedia was founded in September 2012 in Western Australia, near York, by Lama-la Guru Vello Väärtnõu (Master VanTao), Head of Estonian Nyingma and with the little help of Benny. It was first presented at the ECAI conference at the University of California, Berkeley, in December 2012, under its first name, the Chinese Buddhist Encyclopedia. Guru Vello had earlier created the first Buddhist encyclopedia in the Estonian language and he wished to build something larger and lasting for future generations. Most of the writing, translating, illustrating and linking was his own work, done voluntarily and at his own expense.

What we do

  • Gather and preserve Buddhist texts, sutras, tantras, commentaries, prayers and images, so that they are not lost
  • Present them with both the traditional Buddhist understanding and the academic view, with terms given in their original languages
  • Welcome all traditions equally: Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana, and Buddhism in every land
  • Keep everything free for everyone, everywhere

In Guru Vello's words

"This is my purpose in the life, to make Buddhism accessible to people for free. When Buddha Shakyamuni declared his teachings in the market-places, he didn't ask money for this."

Looking ahead

The Encyclopedia keeps growing toward a World Buddhist Encyclopedia: a categorised and linked library of Buddhist texts, prayers, rituals and knowledge from all schools, carried forward in the spirit in which it was founded by Vello Väärtnõu.🙏
