three groups (三聚). Sentient beings are divided into three groups:
 (1) the group that definitely progresses on the right path to bodhi (正定聚);
 (2) the group that definitely is not on the bodhi path (邪定聚);
 (3) the group that is indecisive about its path (不定聚).
Some members of the third group, through causes and conditions, may come to join one of the other two groups.
