four grave prohibitions (四重禁). These are the prohibitions against committing the four grave root sins:
(1) killing,
(2) stealing,
(3) sexual misconduct, and
(4) lying, especially alleging spiritual attainment one does not have.
The third root sin for monastic Buddhists is having sex.
