智威 (d. 680) (PY Zhiwei; Jpn Chii)
The third patriarch of the T'ient'ai school in China. Chih-wei entered the priesthood at Kuo-ch'ing-ssu temple on Mount T'ient'ai and studied the T'ient'ai doctrine under Chang-an, T'ient'ai's immediate successor. Later he lived on Mount Lien-tan and taught large numbers of disciples, and it is said that his lectures attracted as many as seven hundred listeners.
