A fine thangka depicting Pehar Kunga Gyalpo (five Kings)
The Central deity is Pehar, or his emanation Dorje Dregden, who is a protective deity in all schools of Tibetan Buddhism. The State Oracle of Tibet is a representation of this deity in his wrathful form - Nechung Chokyong. He is seated on the back of a white lion atop a sun and moon disc resting on a lotus. He holds an iron hook, a bow and arrow, a sword, a knife and a stick. He wears a golden 'setheb' hat with a wide brim. He is surrounded by the other four Kings - his emanations - Indra on his elephant (king of the mind); on buputra on his white lioness(king of the body); Shingjachen on his black steed (king of merit); and Dralla on his black mule with white hooves (king of speech). Above him are Padmasambhava, who brought him into the Buddhist pantheon and blue Dud-ging.
This painting would have been kept in a sealed wooden thangka mount, and is in pristine condition.
