In the early 1970s, the Dalai Lama was implicated in a conspiracy to assassinate the 18-year-old King of Bhutan. His brother, Gyalo Dondrup and Lhading, his personal respresentative in Bhutan, were named by the Bhutanese authorities as the principle agents of the conspiracy.

This continued a long history of the Dalai Lamas attempting to invade or meddle with Bhutan.
