Kōyasan ; Mother temple of the Shingon School of Bsm. in Japan. Founded on a beautiful hill south of Kyoto by Kōbō Daishi (q.v.) in 816.

He is buried there and his tomb is the object of much devotion.

One of the two most popular Bst. centres in Japan. (See also Hiei.)
