法照 (n.d.) (PY Fazhao; Jpn Hoshoor Hossho)
A priest of the Pure Land teaching in China in the eighth century. He initiated a new form of reciting the name of Amida Buddha, the basic practice of that school, in which Amida's name is chanted in five distinct tones. This, he claimed, Amida himself had taught him. He successfully propagated the Pure Land teachings and was honored with the title Teacher of the Nation by the emperor.
