āchārya 阿闍梨 (Skt; Jpn ajari): An honorific title meaning teacher, conferred upon a virtuous monk who guides the conduct of disciples and serves as their example. In Japan, ajari was a rank in the priesthood, and the term was also used to designate an official post.
