A Concise Mahāmudrā Preliminary Practice

from the New and Old Secret Mantra’s Ripening and Liberating Practices of Generation and Completion

by Trinlé Jampé Jungné

Namo mahāmudraye.

Homage to the Great Seal!

düsum gyelwa kün gyi ngowo nyi

You embody all buddhas of past, present, and future;

den nyi dampé chögo jungwé né

you are a wellspring of the sacred Dharma that teaches the two truths;

pak tsok gendün gyatsö drenpa ché

great leader of the noble assembly, the oceanic sangha

drinchen tsawé lamar sölwa dep

gracious root guru, I supplicate you!

deljor top kyang yün ring mitak chi

Though I have attained the freedoms and riches, these pass before long, and end in death.

shi tsé karnak ledré lu misi

Upon death, there is no way to escape the good and bad deeds I have performed;

khamsum gang du kyé kyang dukngel dang

wherever I am born within the three realms, there is nothing but suffering!

khorwé tsön lé nyur du tarwé chir

So I may swiftly gain freedom from this prison of samsara,

gosum gewé lé la kölwar ja

I will apply my three gates of body, speech, and mind to virtuous action!

Going for Refuge

rang dün namkhar chötrin gyatsö ü

In the sky before me, amid an ocean of offering clouds

zhelmé khangzang ü su sengé tri

is an immeasurable palace in which stand five lion thrones.

nga tsom ü su drinchen dorjé chang

On the central throne sits gracious Vajradhara,

shar du yidam lho ru shakyatup

on the eastern throne are the yidam deities, on the southern throne Buddha Śākyamuni,

nup tu damchö jang du chenrezik

on the western throne the sacred Dharma, and on the northern throne Avalokiteśvara.

dor na kyapné könchok gyatso nam

In brief, an ocean of precious objects of refuge

is vividly present before me, like clouds billowing in the sky.

dak sok khanyam drowa malüpa

In their presence, I and all other beings without exception, in number infinite as space,

ngak yi sum güpé kyap su dro

devotedly go for refuge with body, speech, and mind.

kadrin nyamé lama dampa dang

To the gracious guru, peerless and sublime;

yidam lhatsok tönchok sangyé dang

to the yidam deities; to Lord Buddha, the supreme teacher;

kyopa damchö drenpa gendün

to the sacred Dharma, our protector; and to the Sangha, our guide—

könchok rinchen sum la kyap su chi

to the Three Precious Ones, these rare jewels, we go for refuge.

Accumulate repetitions of that.

ngak yi sum güpé chaktsel zhing

I devotedly pay homage with body, speech, and mind.

chi nang sangwé chötrin gyatsö chö

I present you with vast clouds of offerings—outer, inner, and secret.

diktung kün shak gé la jeyirang

All misdeeds and downfalls I confess; in all virtue I rejoice.

chökhor kor zhin tak tu zhuk söldep

Turning the wheel of Dharma, remain here forever, I pray!

getsok namkhé tanyam dro la ngo

All gatherings of virtue I dedicate to beings, infinite as space.

kün kyang miné jangchup topar shok

May we all attain buddhahood beyond abiding!

khanyam dro kün pamar ma gyur mé

Each and every being, in number infinite as space, has been my parent in the past.

di nam sangyé gopang topjé chir

So that they may all attain the state of awakening,

I will train in the six perfections, the four means of gathering, and more:

gyelsé sempé chöpar lapar gyi

the conduct of the spiritual warriors, the buddhas’ heirs.

dro nam dé den dukngel drelwa dang

May all beings have happiness, may they be free from suffering,

pakpé dewa namyang minyam shing

may their exalted joy never decline,

kün kyang nyamnyi tangnyom la né shok

and may they abide in equanimity, the equal nature of all things.

kyapyül tamché ö zhu dak zhen la

The objects of refuge melt into light and dissolve into myself and all others.

timpé drip jang sangyé topar gyur

Thus, our obscurations are cleansed and we attain buddhahood.

lama ö zhu rang dang yermé dré

The guru melts into light and fully merges with me.

sangwa sum dang yermé rochik ngang

In the continuum of equal taste inseparable from the three secrets,

ösel chakgya chenpö ngang du zhak

I let be in the state of unceasing luminosity, the Great Seal.

With that, rest in equipoise.

Through this virtue, having swiftly accomplished

pelden lama drup gyur né

the state of the Glorious Guru,

drowa chik kyang malüpa

may I establish all wandering beings,

dé yi sa la göpar shok

without a single exception, at that very level.
