Alaya-vjjñana (Sk.) The central or universal consciousness which is the womb or ‘store’ (alaya) consciousness. A term introduced by the Yogacara School of Indian Bsm. (q.v.) For comparison with the Unconscious of Western psychology see Suzuki, Zen Buddhism and Psychoanalysis (1960).
