Andae

andae: The simplest form of robe that a Buddhist priest wears when he is either resting or at work.

The andae is one of the three robes *sanne 三衣, traditionally owned by every Buddhist priest.

A large number of Buddhist statues, especially *nyora 如来 images, are shown in this robe.

Since it was usually made by sewing together five pieces of rectangular cloth, the robe came to be known as gojou-kesa 五条袈裟 (a five-strip robe).
