2023, ISLE: Interdisciplinary Studies in Literature and Environment
In ancient China, the tradition of observing nature is combined with Yin-yang and the Five-Phase theories, which were later incorporated into the ancient arts of divination, including the technique of predicting weather changes by observing the behavior and health of animals. The observation of the close connection between animals and weather developed into the worship of animals, that is, what can be called the cult of animals. This article aims to analyze the rise of the cult of the pig in ancient China, with special reference to the context of environmental and climate changes.

Knowing Animals in China’s History2018 •
In the year 1864 William Alexander Parson Martin (1827–1916), English teacher and professor of international law at the Beijing School of Combined Learning (Tongwen guan 同文館) proposed that, etymologically, it would be more correct to use the (by then) customary terms for animals (dongwu動物) and plants (zhiwu 植物) to refer to two types of property, namely, goods and objects that are movable and non-movable. Indeed, animals by then went by many terms. Whereas classical literature had used morphological groupings such as ‘birds-beasts-insects-fish’ (niao-shou-chong-yu 鳥獸蟲魚), contemporaries of Martin also addressed animals as the ‘hundred beasts’ (bai chong 百蟲 or bai shou 百獸). For one short-lived moment, lexical debates laid bare the ambiguous role of ‘animals’ in human knowledge debates. Animals hold a vulnerable place in historical human practices and thought, not only in terms of name or meaning. As research in the field of animal studies since 1990 has shown, historically, individuals...

The Other Yijing The Book of Changes in Chinese History, Politics, and Everyday Life
Yijing Divination and Religion during the Tang Dynasty2021 •
This chapter presents how the Yijing was understood and “used” in different religious, mantic, and other forms of practices in the Tang period, as shown in the historical texts. Beyond the philosophical as well as metaphysical understandings of this classical text, it is important to note the alternative use of the Yijing during the Tang dynasty in order fully to comprehend how this book was perceived in China in the past. In other words, the book itself was not only treated as a“canon”for abstract exegesis, but also as a toolfor explaining various and diverse issues within daily life as well as within religious techniques. This chapter investigates the attitudes toward the Yijing at the Tang court, together with the social landscape of Yijing divination among the social elites in the Tang, as well as how elements of the Yijing entered different religious and technical spheres at that time. We shall see how the Yanjing, as a cosmological, divinatory text, was received by various social communities and how such a reception shaped the social landscape regarding the understanding of the Yijing.
This article explores popular religious conceptualizations of the environment and disasters in early twentieth-century China. In 1931, the city of Wuhan experienced a catastrophic flood. Soon a rumor began to circulate suggesting that the disaster had been caused by the recent demolition of a local Dragon King Temple. This article examines this rumor as a mode of popular discourse, using it to illustrate debates among members of the local population regarding the link between the environment, religion, and disasters. It describes the place of Dragon Kings in late imperial religious environmental management, before discussing how the status of these deities was devalued during the early twentieth century. It argues that, in spite of vigorous attempts at secular reform, for a large section of the population the experience of disasters continued to be dominated by popular religious conceptualizations of the environment. While modern critics disparaged what they saw as lamentable superstitions, for many people rainmaking Dragon Kings continued to exist.
