Annutara yoga Tantra

This is yogini Tantra. This is known as the "left-hand Tantra." This is the profound path of the "transgressive discipline." This is the Tantra that gives Tantra a bad name. Christmas Humphreys has famously rolled over in his grave.

The Vajrayogini Tantra which so many of Trungpa Rinpoches students and all of Kagyu beginner tantrikas take now with a grain of salt is based on the transgressive discipline of the profound path of the Annutara yoga Tantra. Just the fact that authentic practitioners developed this path is astonishing. And the fact that it has become co-opted by monasticism and remains so potent is remarkable. It is our authentic lineage. Very simply. In ancient Bramhanical India the right hand was considered pure and the left hand was considered impure for the simple fact that one ate food with the right hand and wiped your ass with your left. This was before toilet paper.

All vajrayogini practitioners will know that we bless things with our left hand-- the poo poo hand. Why would you do such a thing? For a traditional Indian Brahmin this is so taboo! What is taboo? How can breaking that become such a powerful path of realization? Look at your own mind. Then watch a video of Trungpa Rinpoche giving a talk and lifting a glass of liquor to his lips. Sometimes there is a mischevious smile. That is called transmission in our lineage-- and that is why we bless things with the poo poo hand.
