The Abhidharma prakaraṇapāda Śāstra (K949) was written by Vasumitra, a scholar-monk from Gandhara, and was translated by Xuanzang, a Chinese scholar-monk and famous pilgrim to India, around the mid-7th century. It is one of the "Six Treatises on the Arising of Wisdom Through the Abhidharma," the others being K945, K946, K947, K948, and K1484. It discusses the perspectives of the Sarvastivada School, one of the twenty schools during the Nikaya period of Indian Buddhism. It is an important resource for Buddhist studies of Nikaya Buddhism.
It has eight chapters and explains Buddhist terms in detail from the perspective of the Sarvastivada School. This translation is the newer of two existing translations, the other being the Abhidharma prakaraṇapāda Śāstra (K950) translated by Gunabhadra and Bodhiyasas. The two versions are similar in overall structure and organization.
