alaya vijnana (ba-shi): The storehouse or basis from which come all “seeds” of consciousness --the eighth consciousness. Also called the ground consciousness. The latent imprint of all karma created in the present life and previous lives is stored in the alaya consciousness. It is regarded as that which undergoes the cycle of birth and death.
