勢至菩薩 (Skt Mahasthamaprapta; Jpn Seishi-bosatsu)

    The bodhisattva Great Power, also known as Gainer of Great Authority. According to the Meditation on the Buddha Infinite Life Sutra and the Buddha Infinite Life Sutra, a bodhisattva who attends Amida Buddha together with Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds. The former sutra describes him as illuminating all with the light of his wisdom, saving people from the sufferings of the three evil paths and endowing them with unmatched power. In the "Introduction" (first) chapter of the Lotus Sutra, Bodhisattva Great Power appears under the name of Bodhisattva Gainer of Great Authority as one of those assembled on Eagle Peak to listen to Shakyamuni Buddha preach. In the "Never Disparaging" (twentieth) chapter of the sutra, Shakyamuni addresses him as the representative of the whole assembly.
