Buddha Nature: How to Realise This Through the Practice of Sutrayana & Tantrayana

Sugatagarbha or Buddha nature is a unique concept of Mahayana Buddhism highlighted in the Third Turning of Wheel of Dharma by Lord Buddha. According to this philosophy, all beings regardless of their virtuous or non-virtuous background have this potential to achieve Buddhahood. The practice of sutra especially Mahayana and Tantrayana enables us to actualize our basic inner goodness which is within all of us. As such, there is a lot of hope to overcome the sufferings of samsara and achieve liberation if we practice the teachings perfectly with the help of a spiritual master. Even though, both the general Mahayana and tantrayana speaks of actualizing our true nature, the means and methods to do so differs greatly. Khen Rinpoche will explain in detail on this topic.

Duk Kar (White Umbrella) Empowerment
Duk Kar empowerment will be confer according to the Namcho cycle. The practice of Dur Kar protects practitioners and helps them avoid obstacles. This practice is for healing illness, dispelling harmful interference and bringing auspicious results.

Yumka Dechen Gyalmo Empowerment & Teaching

The terma known as Yumka Dechen Gyalmo (“Queen of Great Bliss”) was revealed by the omniscient Jigme Lingpa, primary transmitter of the Longchen Nyingthig cycle of Dzogchen teachings. Khenchen Pema Sherab Rinpoche will confer the Yumka empowerment on Longchen Nyingthig cycle.

Yumka is practiced on Dakini Day, 25th day of Tibetan calendar, in our centre, Namdroling Monastery and many other Palyul centres worldwide. Khen Rinpoche will also teach on the practice text of Yumka “The Queen of Great Bliss of Longchen Nyingthig”. This practice is an especially efficacious means for purifying one’s Vajrayana samaya. The central meditational deity of Yumka is the Wisdon Dakini Yeshe Tsogyal, consort to Guru Rinpoche.

Khenchen Pema Sherab Rinpoche is the most senior Khenpo in our Palyul monastery. In 1959, he went to India, where he met H.H. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, and received most of his teachings including the Guhyagarbha Root Tantra, Longchenpa’s Treasury of Pith Instructions, Kagyud Ngag Dzod (Treasury of Tantra teachings of Kagyu Lineage), Rinchen Terdzod, Jigme Lingpa’s Yonten Dzod (Treasury of Enlightened Qualities), Patrul Rinpoche’s Words of My Perfect Teacher, and many other sutra and tantra teachings.

On various occasions, he has received many teachings including the Rinchen Terdzod Empowerments and its oral transmission from H.H. Dudjom Rinpoche and H.H. Penor Rinpoche. He received all the teachings related to Jang-ter (Northern Treasure Teachings) from H.H. Taklung Tsetrul Rinpoche.

The teachings that he has dispensed include the common traditional sciences of Tibetan grammar, spelling and poetry. Among the uncommon traditional studies, he has taught primarily the Thirteen Great Treatises, Jigme Lingpa’s Treasury of Enlightened Qualities, Mipham Rinpoche’s Osel Nyingpo; a commentary to Guhyagarbha Tantra, Longchenpa’s Trilogy of Resting in the Nature of Mind, Sutra that Gathers All Intentions and Great Accumulations and many other teachings that illustrates the distinct view, meditation, conduct, and fruition of the Nyingma Lineage.
