Jōshū ; (Ch. Chao-chou) ; One of the earliest and greatest Chinese Zen masters (778–897). Famous for his answer ‘Mu’ (q.v.) to the question, ‘Has a dog Buddha-nature?’ His methods were extremely ‘direct’, and his Goroku (sayings) pungent and penetrating.
