The desperation of many Tibetans in dealing with repressive conditions under Chinese rule has become self evident with each new self-immolation. The most recent response to this tragic situation from the Chinese authorities has been to offer a reward for information about the self-immolations. The Tibet Sun has reported in an article on October 26, 2012: "China offers rewards to expose Tibetan immolations." On Thursday the Chinese police said they were offering up to $32,000 as a reward for information on the “black hands” which have been behind a string of self-immolations in a Tibetan-inhabited region. There have been notices posted in Gannan prefecture in the northwest Gansu province which offers the rewards after several Tibetans set themselves on fire in protest against China’s rule of the region.
