five tones (五音). The five pitches on the pentatonic scale. This scale is used all over the world. In Chinese music, the five tones on the major pentatonic scale are called
 gong (宮),
 shang (商),
 jue (角),
 zhi (徵),
 yu (羽),

approximately C, D, E, G, A on the heptatonic scale.
