Gods and Goddesses: The Full Spectrum of Life

From Tibetan Buddhist Encyclopedia

As a child, I remember being fascinated by Greek Gods and Goddesses when this subject was touched on in school. I read everything I could get my hands on about the subject and dreamt of bygone times when living deities walked among men and women. When I was a teenager and living in India, the multidimensional aspects of the Hindu pantheon felt like a homecoming, something I had been longing to rediscover, as if my soul already knew this life approach and was simply remembering it.

A Living Transmission of The Goddess Kali

One day, I was walking in the hills in Mount Abu, Rajasthan, India during a meditation camp with Osho. I came across a small temple in a wild area. Upon entering it, I realized it was a Kali temple. The black image of the goddess with red lolling tongue, holding a sword, was somehow powerfully alluring. I sat down in meditation and gazed at her, full of wonderment at the energy of the place. Suddenly, the statue came alive. It is hard to describe such a moment. I had never imagined a statue could live and breathe, but this one did! The living energy of the goddess flew out of the statue and entered me. In that moment, I became Kali and in so doing, received a complete download of everything Kali is and represents. I knew and understood Kali from the inside!

I understood for example, that Kali is not the horrific outer representation we see in temples, she who has a necklace of skulls and a sword dripping blood. This representation is how she appears to those who are clinging to their egos, holding back from surrender to the divine. The moment we surrender and open ourselves to universal life force energy, she appears in her beneficent aspect, the great mother of the universe.

For the next year and a half, I kept Kali pictures on my walls, and continued receiving numerous living transmissions from this phenomenal Goddess. Some of the Tantra practices I teach are based on the deep and powerful transmissions from the Goddess Kali.

Accessing God and Goddess Principles blog 7While the practice of Tantra meditation has been my baseline from the beginning of my path to now, tremendous inspiration and continuity has been provided by numerous God and Goddess aspects, whether from the Hindu, Tibetan, Egyptian, Japanese, Chinese or Greek Traditions. I realized over the years that all of these God or Goddess aspects represent a particular frequency, a particular bandwidth in the full spectrum of life experience. Each one carries its own harmonic transmission, within the wholeness of what it is to be human.

The idea of one God, such as in the Judeo Christian traditions, cannot satisfy human beings for long. Thus, today, we see the re-emergence of multi dimensional aspects of Gods and Goddesses from all over the world. The ‘One God’ model does not allow us the fun of being human, in all its rainbow of diversity.

The Full Rainbow of Life In the One God ideal, if we think of this in terms of color, God would be ‘white light’. (When all colors of the rainbow merge, this becomes white light). In our frequency-based world, we are made of all different colors. We strive for a perfect harmony where all colors are merged into white light. However, if we deny the colors, and say only white light is, we are missing all the richness and colors of life.

blog 5The point is, life is a school. By diving deeply into the colors of life, we learn particular lessons. When one lesson is absorbed and known through our life experience, we are ready for another lesson, another frequency. The state of white light, or Enlightenment, evolves naturally from the experience of having deeply lived each color and knowing the nectar of its transmission from the inside. When we are ready, all colors merge into white light and we are simply one with universal energy.

But the dance of life does not end there. From within white light, we can then choose to play with any color we like, as a game. In this sense, life is Leela, God’s Divine Play. The colors of life are how we play the game.

I visited a big cathedral in Paris and it was interesting to see that within the cathedral, there were many niches for saints. I witnessed people coming and making offers and prayers to these various saints, each one of which represents a particular aspect of life experience, one for healing, one for safe travel, etc. It was obvious that the church, while trying to preserve the ‘One Godconcept, had to make space for the multidimensional need of human beings, by substituting saints instead of pagan Gods or Goddesses.

Visitations from The Goddess There are many sightings of the ‘Virgin Mary’ and in equal measure, of ‘Kwan Yin’ or of the ‘Goddess Tara.’ When I came to the West from India and began my adventure of living in the world, a Goddess who I referred to as the ‘White Lady’ visited me. She appeared in my sleep and informed me that she was there to support me to find my ease and comfort while I was helping people ‘in the world.’ After that, she appeared numerous times whenever I had a particular survival need, to nurture me and help me to find stability in worldly life.

I was astonished by these visitations, and after much research, came to the conclusion that her quality was best described as the Goddess Tara. However, I believe she is in fact, a universal Goddess and in different cultures she is named differently. She may be known as Kwan Yin, or Tara or Virgin Mary, depending on the mindset of the people witnessing her appearance. I have spoken to many women about this phenomenon and a surprising number of women have reported to me that they have been visited by her and also didn’t know how to name her.

The Living Deity OlympusIn my Greek home, I have a magnificent view of Mt Olympus, the ancient home of the Gods. In visiting Mt. Olympus I am amazed to discover that this mountain is alive with a spiritual power, which is simply phenomenal. It is truly an enlightened mountain! Who are these Gods and what is this energy? This remains a mystery, but whatever it is, the power of it is still alive!

In India, they have a tradition of holding rituals and ceremonies that bring the living quality of a God or Goddess into a statue. My experiences in temples, or in front of statues in India, is that these places are alive with supernatural power and energy. By sitting in meditation in such places, if we are sensitive, we can literally catch the living transmission of this particular frequency as represented by this God or Goddess, or this temple. I adore visiting such places and imbibe the ancient wisdom, which is striving to be made alive through us.

You Are the God or Goddess Whom You Worship As long as there is breath and life on this multidimensional plane of reality, so there will be deities that represent all the colors of life. The deity is actually our own potential to fully understand the divine nature of that particular color of the rainbow within ourselves. You are the God or Goddess whom you worship! Once you have owned the transmission of this deity, you are ready for the next color, the next frequency to be imbibed and understood.

In Tantra and the Vedic tradition, each deity comes with its own mantra and Yantric symbol. By meditating with these, we can take quantum leaps in consciousness. This Vedic approach is rooted in deep science, a science which is in its infant stages of development in today’s world. It is the science of consciousness and how to help human beings to attain their fullest potential.

The Science of Worship

By working with the frequencies of sound, color and with visual support, we tap into universal energies. In order to facilitate human beings to access these in a way we can comprehend, these energies are ascribed to the form of deities. The Human Mind blog 8relates very strongly to visual and energetic imprints. We only have to look at modern day advertising to comprehend the truth in this. Gods and Goddesses are a form of ‘advertising’ in the service of spiritual and whole person Enlightenment whereas our modern day advertising is in most cases in service of enslavement to the consumer model of life.

In general, if you are drawn to a particular Goddess or Godly manifestation, you can dive into imbibing this through prayer, Mantra, Yantra and Meditation practices. This will continue till you have the feeling and inner experience of having ‘become this Goddess or God.’ In India, it is well known that people are born who are manifestations of this or that God or Goddess. There have been many incarnations of Krishna, or Lakshmi, and so on. These are people who embodied the qualities of that God or Goddess so powerfully that they can be worshipped as a living deity carrying this particular life aspect. Amma is an example of this, her divine presence being attributed to the merging of Krishna and Kali.

Energy Follows Intent

For those who wonder how it is possible to experience the living deity through a statue, it is helpful to understand that energy follows intent. It is not that belief makes it so, i.e. that it is all our imagination, but that literally, universal life force is undirected, and if we tap into this with our clear intent, this energy will manifest in the way we set our intention. For those who meditate on a regular basis, they discover that they have to be careful what they think because it will come to pass!

Many Tantra Meditations access this fact to support the meditator in awakening a particular life principle. The science of life as encoded in Tantra, Ayurvedya, Vedic and Yoga scriptures is a most refined way of tapping into our full potential and the full potential for civilization.
