Great Compassion Sutra
[大悲経] (Chin Ta-pei-ching; Jpn Daihi-kyo )

A sutra translated into Chinese in 558 by Narendrayashas. This sutra describes how Shakyamuni Buddha, about to enter nirvana, transfers the Law to the gods Brahmaand Shakra and to his disciples Mahakashyapa and Ananda. It extols the blessings of chanting the Buddha's name and making offerings to his relics. In this sutra, Shakyamuni instructs Ananda to work with Mahakashyapa to compile his teachings after his death, so that they will be transmitted to posterity. A Tibetan translation is also extant.
