Burnt offerings.jpg

Sur or 'burnt offering' (Wyl. gsur) — a type of offering usually prepared from a mixture of the three white foods and three sweet foods which is then burnt on coals or in a fire.

The smoke and odour generated by the offering has the power to especially satisfy wandering spirits and bardo beings who feed on smells.

Burnt offerings (gsur). Smoke produced by burning flour mixed with pure food and sacred substances. This smoke, offered during a meditation on Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion, can nourish the bardo consciousness as well as hungry ghosts.
