The Yoga of the Three Purifications of Shri Chakrasamvara

IntroductionAccording to Lama Zopa Rinpoches instructi ons, it is best to perform the Vajrasatt va Meditati on at the beginning of this practi ce. However, if one has ti me constraints and one already engages in a Vajrasatt va practi ce on a daily basis in the conti nu-um of another Highest Yoga Tantra sadhana (whether Vajrasat-tva or another deity), it is permissible to skip this secti on and instead, aft er reciti ng the lines for taking refuge and generati ng bodhichitt a, to begin directly with the actual Yoga of the Three Purifi cati ons, beginning with the secti on on the purifi cati on of the mind.

Refuge and Bodhichitta At all ti mes I take refugeIn Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha; In all of the three vehicles,In the dakinis of secret mantra yoga,In the heroes, heroines, and empowering goddesses,In the great beings, the bodhisatt vas,And above all, at all ti mes,I take refuge in my spiritual master.I myself will become HerukaFor the sake of all living beings,And then I shall lead all them allTo Herukas supreme state. Vajrasattva MeditationFrom a PAM on my crown comes a lotus. From AH comes a moon seat, on top of which, from HUM, appears a fi ve-spoked white va-jra marked at the center by HUM. Lights radiate from the HUM, accomplish the two purposes, and then return. The vajra is com-pletely transformed into white Vajrasatt va, having one face and two hands, holding vajra and bell. He sits in the cross-legged vajra positi on and embraces the consort, white Dorje Nyemma, who has one face and two hands, holding curved knife and skullcup. Both are draped in silks and various precious jeweled ornaments. Both have an OM at the crown, an AH at the throat, and a HUM at the heart. From the HUM at the heart, light radiates and invites wis-dom beings similar to themselves.

    JAH HUM BAM HO

    They become non-dual.

Again lights radiate from the HUM at the heart and invite the em-powering deiti es.

All Tathagatas, I request you to bestow the actual empowerment upon them.

Following this request, the empowering deiti es hold aloft vases fi lled with the nectar of exalted wisdom.

OM SARVA TATHAGATA ABHISHEKATA SAMAYA SHRI YE HUM

Thus, empowerment is conferred. The bodies are fi lled with the nectar of exalted wisdom. The excess water on the crown is com-pletely transformed into Akshobya, who adorns the top of the head.

Around the HUM on the moon at Vajrasatt vas heart appears the 100-syllable mantra, circling around the rim.

  • Three Purifications 5

Bhagavan Vajrasatt va, please cleanse all negati viti es and obscura-ti ons of myself and all senti ent beings and purify all degenerated and broken commitments.

Having been entreated in this way, light radiates from the mantra garland and HUM at Vajrasatt vas heart. The negati viti es and ob-scurati ons of all senti ent beings are purifi ed, and pleasing o erings are made to all buddhas and their children. All their good qualiti es of body, speech, and mind return with the light rays, and dissolve into the HUM and mantra garland. Thereby, a stream of white nec-tar descends from the place of union of the father and mother. Entering through my Brahma aperture, it fi lls my whole body with the nectar of exalted wisdom. By this cleansing, all my negati viti es and obscurati ons of the three doors are purifi ed.

OM VAJRA HERUKA SAMAYA / MANUPALAYA / HERUKA TVENOPATISHTHA / DRIDHO ME BHAVA / SUTOSHYO ME BHAVA / SUPOSHYO ME BHAVA / ANURAKTO ME BHAVA / SARVA SIDDHIM ME PRAYACCHA / SARVA KARMA SUCHAME CHITTAM SHRIYAM KURU HUM / HA HA HA HA HO / BHAGAVAN / VAJRA HERUKA MAME MUNCHA / HERUKA BHAVA / MAHA SAMAYA SATTVA AH HUM PHAT (21x)

Through ignorance and delusion, I have broken and degenerated my commitments. Guru Protector, give refuge! Chief holder of the vajra, embodiment of great compassion, I take refuge in the fore-most of beings.

Vajrasatt va replies: Child of the lineage, all of your negati viti es, obscurati ons, and broken commitments have been purifi ed.

Then Vajrasatt va dissolves into me. My three doors become insep-arable from the body, speech, and mind of Vajrasatt va.

Meditate strongly here on the unifi cati on of your own mind and the mind of Vajrasatt va

  • 6 Three Purifications

The Yoga of the Three PurificationsThe Yoga of the Three Purifi cati ons to purify the three doors is as follows:

    Purification of the mind

The HE of SHRI HERUKA stands for the mind, the source of everything, [and] for the selfl essness of phenomena, found by ex-amining the empty nature of the causal mind.

RU stands for the selfl essness of persons, which is free of the web of a fabricated self [that causes us to] conceptually apprehend a self of persons.

KA stands for the object, suchness, and the subjecti ve mind, abiding neither unharmoniously nor separately.

SHRI stands for non-dual exalted wisdom, totally inseparable from empti ness, its object: This is the meaning of EVAM.

Thinking in this way, purify the mind.

    Purification of the body

Within this sphere of empti ness, I arise instantly as dark blue Heru-ka, with one face and two arms, holding vajra and bell. I stand with my right leg outstretched and embrace my wisdom consort, red Vajravarahi, who has one face and two arms and is holding a curved knife and skullcup.

    SHRI HERUKO HAM (3x)

Saying this three ti mes with the blissful thought of benefi ti ng all living beings, holding the divine pride of the physical appear-ance, purify the body.

The mantra garland, together with rays of light, circles counter-clockwise three ti mes at my navel. The abiding assembly of deiti es of the three wheels radiate out from my right nostril into the ten directi ons, dispelling all interferences, and then return through my left nostril, dissolving into the mantra garland at the navel.

    Imagining this, purify the speech.

Dedication and Verses of AuspiciousnessMay I myself become HerukaFor the sake of all living beings,And lead every one of themTo Herukas supreme state.

If I do not obtain this supreme state in this life,May I, at the ti me of death, be receivedBy the Lord, the Consort, and their entourage,With clouds of o erings, the sound of pleasant music,And many wondrous signs.

Then at the end of the clear light of death,May I be led to the pure land of Kechara,The realm of the knowledge-holders who have accomplished the

supreme method, And there may I swift ly complete this profound path.

May intensive dedicati on to the teachings and practi ce of Chakrasamvara increase,And may this passage for those who want liberati on,Crossed by tens of millions of powerful yogis,Never decline, but last for a very long ti me.

May the heroes and yoginis, together with their entourages,Who abide in the twenty-four supreme places of this world,And who possess the power to accomplish this method without obstructi on,Always and unceasingly assist us.
