The Yavanarajya Inscription on the Maghera Well Stone was found near Mathura in 1988. In the evolving new vocabulary, Yavana, likely from Ionia, means Greek, especially those from Alexandria in Egypt. The foundation stone of the Kushan Greek Kingdom (Yavanarajya) covered South Asia and parts of Chinese Central Asia. The Rabatak Inscription engraved in Tochrhian Greek on a rock was found near Surkh Kotal in Afghanistan in 1993. This is one more historical document on the Greco-Scythian Kushan dynasty that flourished alongside the Roman Empire. The Bodhisattva or the i self-sacrificing “Buddha to be” repeatedly pointing his head (Gk. Kapale) is one of the enigmatic mages of the period. It isn't easy to interpret the meaning behind the sign. This brief effort to transcribe the head pointing might lead to a greater understanding of the Greco-Buddhist funerary cult.

(2022/2) Two Newly Found Bronze Statues with Sanskrit Inscription Originating from Historical Northwest India (with W. Luo)2022 •
The paper aims to discuss two ancient bronze statues depicting Bodhisattvas, which have only recently been uncovered. Both bronzes noticeably originate from the area in the northwest of ancient India. Our studies focus, first of all, on the Sanskrit inscriptions that both bronzes provide us with. Based on the paleographic analysis of the script type, which was widely used in the various areas of historical northwest India, both bronze statues examined here are datable to the first half of the 7th century. From the last decades of the 6th century to the first decades of the 8th century, the royal family Palola Ṣāhis ruled the area of Gilgit and beyond, as Oskar von Hinüber found out by investigating the stone inscriptions, inscriptions on bronzes, manuscript colophons and protection wards. Concerning the relationship of the Palola Ṣāhis with the art tradition in Tibet, “one might at least assume that some, if not all of the bronzes were taken to Tibet over the course of the Tibetan campaigns around 720 CE and the eventual conquest of Balūr around 745 CE”.

An Inscribed Bronze Sculpture of a Buddha in bhadrāsana at Museum Ranggawarsita in Semarang (Central Java, Indonesia)2013 •
A fine bronze Buddha image (ca. 9th century), from Rejoso near Candi Plaosan in Central Java province, was recently found in storage at the Museum Ranggawarsita in Semarang. The Buddha is seated in bhadrāsana, the posture with two legs pendant, and with the hands in dharmacakramudrā, an iconographic type frequently found in South Asia and Java during the second half of the first millennium. This bronze is most remarkable for the Sanskrit inscription written on its back in a northeastern Indian script. The inscription cites the common ye dharmāḥ formula in unique combination with the heart mantra jinajik. Our study deals first with the artistic style and iconography of the bronze image. We then discuss the inscription and its paleographic features, and review the textual sources in which this special mantra occurs. Overall, we are concerned with questions of provenance, dating, and the controversial issue of the identification of the Buddha who is represented. We cautiously propose to consider the inscribed bronze sculpture as embedding a universal and imperial form of Buddhahood, and highlight its significance for our understanding of early tantric Buddhist iconography and concepts in ancient Java and beyond.
