Delving into the Profundity of the Flower Garland Sutra; 華厳経探玄記; (Chin Hua-yen-ching-t’an-hsüan-chi; Jpn Kegongyo-tangen-ki )

A commentary on the sixty-volume Flower Garland Sutra by Fa-tsang (643-712), the third patriarch of the Flower Garland (Hua-yen) school in China, who systematized the school's doctrines.

It consists of ten chapters in twenty volumes.

The first volume explains in nine chapters the sutra's background, its position among the Buddhist teachings, its core doctrines, title, the history of its translations, the school's classification of the Buddhist teachings, etc.

The other volumes, which together comprise the last or tenth chapter, interpret the text of the entire sutra, citing various sutras and commentaries.

This commentary is considered a major reference work in the study of the Flower Garland Sutra along with Ch'eng-kuan's two commentaries on the eighty-volume Flower Garland Sutra,

The Annotations on the Flower Garland Sutra and The Meaning of the Flower Garland Sutra Based on an Earlier Commentary.
