It is one of the many ritual visualizations that imprint changes in ourselves. We are the ones who create the changes.

Tibetan Buddhism is only to be practiced if you have a Lama that you work with as your teacher. Tibetan monks, laypeople, even Tibetan doctors, say that Vajrayana will “drive you crazy” if you practice it without a qualified teacher. And my sister (living in another city, also with a Lama) knows a couple people who practiced on their own and became delusional.

So if you want to learn to do Guru Yoga, find a Lama to teach you, and when he feels you are ready to work with it, he will teach you. Do NOT do any practices that you find here and there, on your own. Leave it up to your teacher to assess your readiness.

If you cannot find a teacher practice Theravadan Buddhism, with its Vipassana/Mindfulness meditation. It is just as good, and is SAFE without a teacher. But even there, you will gain insights faster if you have a monk to teach you.
