Jōdo ; The Pure Land School of China founded in the fourth century on the smaller and larger Sukhāvatī-vyūha Sutras and the Amitāyur-dhyāna Sutra. When transferred to Japan, Hōnen Shōnin and Shinran Shōnin (q.v.) turned this balanced doctrine of faith and works into an extremist practice of salvation by faith alone. (See Hōnen, Pure Land School, Shin, Shinran Shōnin.)
