Kumarajiva was one of the four most outstanding translators of Buddhist sutras in the history of Buddhism in China. An erudite master of the field, Kumarajiva was dedicated to translating Buddhist scriptures from Sanskrit into Chinese. In order to make the texts easy to understand, he adopted a liberal style of translation, which gave his translations a distinct flowing smoothness that reflected his desire to convey the meaning of the scripture rather than translate it word for word. Kumarajiva Pagoda, which lies in Huxian County, 30 kilometers southwest of Xi’an city, was built to immortalize his achievements. The relics of Kumarajiva preserved in Kumarajiva Pagoda make it the representative treasure of Caotang Temple.
