ma rig pa rman gsum - "Three kinds of ignorance."

Only the paths of the Great Perfection khregs chod Trekcho and thod gral Togal describe the sequence of levels of the complete state of ma rig of ignorance experienced by beings. Sometimes they correlate with causes. They are causes in the sense of varieties of loss of knowledge of reality, whereby they lead to the total loss of knowledge experienced by beings.

In the sequence of manifestation:

1) the first ignorance/cause, bdag nyid gcig pu’i ma rig pa ignorance of the same identity (nature);

2) lhan cig skyes pa'i ma rig pa co-arising ignorance; and

3) kun tu brtags pa'i ma rig pa conceptual ignorance.

The first is also called rgyu bdag nyid gcig pa’i rig pa causal ignorance of the same identity (nature), because it is the exclusive cause which gives rise to the other two.

The third type of ignorance is often miswritten as kun tu brtags pa'i ma rig pa.
