Some schools of Buddhism believe that the Mahakala mantra can exorcise evil spirits, remove negative energy, attract wealth and increase prosperity for those who recite it. Who is Mahakala?


Mahakala is a dharmapala (Dharmapala) deity in Vajrayana Buddhism, he is revered in most Tibetan and Japanese Buddhist tantric traditions. “Maha” literally means great and “kala” denotes time, hence “Mahakala” means “timeless great”.

Mahakala is usually black in color and appears in 75 different forms, each representing an incarnation of a different Buddha or Bodhisattva. The color black represents the complete absence of color, it represents His true nature as absolute or ultimate reality, transcendent in all its forms.

Despite his wrathful attitude, his essential quality was to awaken compassion. His blessings are said to be able to quell difficulties arising from depression, anger, and hatred. In addition, he also has the duty to protect the Dharma from demons and demons.

What is Protectors deity?


The Protectors or Wrathful deities in Buddhism known as Dharmapāla or Dhammapāla. This is the protectors who protect Buddhism and Buddhists. Those who vow to follow the Sādhana and recite the mantra are blessed by those gods.


Symbolic meaning of Mahakala


Black Mahakala is depicted with different forms depending on the teachings of different schools of Buddhism.

For example, Mahakala Bernagchen of the Karma Kagyu school with two arms holding weapons and a very large mouth, Mahakala with 4 arms holding weapons is the guardian of the Drikung Kagyu school, and Mahakala with 6 arms holding weapons is from the school Gelugpa (6 arms representing the 6 perfections: Patience, generosity, diligence, morality, wisdom and meditation).

In Japan, Mahakala is considered the god of fortune, who brings luck, wealth and prosperity to the family. He is often depicted holding a golden hammer and sitting on a pail of rice, with rats nearby.
