Addressing the issue of ritual manipulation of kamma in Thai Buddhism, the author argues that the doctrinal formulation of kamma—underdetermined in terms of action-representation, irresponsive to contemporary rituals while reinforcing the intuitions of non-obvious causal connections—is unlikely to survive the process of cultural transmission unchanged. Ritual helps internalize the concept and makes it relevant on a larger cultural scale.

Kriyāsaṃgraha: Compendium of Buddhist RitualsThe present publication essentially represents an abridged version of the entire Kriyāsaṃgraha. The basic structure, the chapter divisions, the sequence of the exposition within the chapters, and the laconic style, have been retained. Some sections of the original text have been paraphrased, some summarized, some translated, and some omitted altogether. The content and lay out of the pdf file included here is the same as in the original publication, but the pagination is different.
Research in the Sociology of Organizations
Becoming a Buddhist: The Duality of Ritual and Belief (JA Rodríguez, JW Mohr, L. Halcomb)Drawing on insights from a yearlong ethnography and in-depth survey of the members of a Buddhist monastery located in the heart of modern Europe, we examine how members of the organization come to be more or less involved in the organization and in its core institutional logic. Here we present an exploratory analysis of how individuals’ beliefs about Buddhism and its relationship to everyday life are deeply intertwined with and articulated into different regimes of organizational activities, rituals, and religious practices. Borrowing from institutional logics theory, we use methods for illustrating the relational structure that articulates dualities linking beliefs and practices together. We show that dually ordered assemblages can reveal different types of logics embraced by different members of an organization. Our principal contention is that the greater the structural alignment between an individual’s belief structure, their repertoire of practices, and the institutional logic of the organization, the more well integrated that individual will likely be within the organization, the higher the probability of transformational changes of personal identity, as well as the greater probability of overall success in organizational membership recruitment and retention.
often today in Sri Lanka, an outsider studying our rituals would find it difficult to isolate the Theravada practices and separate it from the Mahayana and Hindu practices which have crept into them. Among most lay devotees, probably there is no special interest to identify and differentiate such encroachments. It is time for us to consider adding another Noble Path, Samma Paribhojana, Right Consumption. Let us perform the rituals in the most nature friendly manner, without over-exploiting our natural resources, without hurting a single living creature. Let every act we do in the name of Buddha Dhamma be peaceful and useful.

Gender equality and the empowerment of women are now widely accepted critical factors for economic, social, and democratic progress of society, yet the status of women is widely varied worldwide, and there is evidence to suggest (Klingarova, 2015) that for the purposes of social geographic investigation, religion may now be a more important variable than race or ethnicity when trying to understand root causes of gender inequality.
