Root Downfalls of the Vajra Vehicle: A Confession

This version of Aśvaghoṣa’s text outlining the fourteen root downfalls of the Vajrayāna differs from the version in the Tengyur; in addition to some minor variations, it contains additional lines to facilitate the confession of all fourteen forms of transgression.







༄༅། །རྡོ་རྗེ་ཐེག་པ་རྩ་བའི་ལྟུང་བ།

Root Downfalls of the Vajra Vehicle: A Confession

རྒྱ་གར་སྐད་དུ། བཛྲ་ཡཱ་ན་མཱུ་ལ་པཏྟི།

In the language of India: Vajrayānamūlāpatti

བོད་སྐད་དུ། རྡོ་རྗེ་ཐེག་པ་རྩ་བའི་ལྟུང་བ།

In the language of Tibet: rdo rje theg pa rtsa ba'i ltung ba

འཕགས་པ་འཇམ་དཔལ་གཞོན་ནུར་གྱུར་པ་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །

Homage to the noble and youthful Mañjuśrī!

ཀུན་ནས་དྭང་བས་བླ་མ་ཡི། །

künné dangwé lama yi

With perfect inspiration, I bow down

ཞབས་ཀྱི་པདྨར་རབ་བཏུད་དེ། །

shyab kyi pemar rab tü dé

At the lotus-feet of the guru.

རྩ་བའི་ལྟུང་བ་བཅུ་བཞི་ནི། །

tsawé tungwa chushyi ni

Here I shall set out the fourteen root downfalls

རྒྱུད་ལས་གསུངས་པ་བཤད་པར་བྱ། །

gyü lé sungpa shepar ja

As they are taught in the tantras.

གང་ཕྱིར་རྡོ་རྗེ་འཛིན་པ་ཡིས། །

gang chir dorjé dzinpa yi

The Vajradhara said that accomplishments

དངོས་གྲུབ་སློབ་དཔོན་རྗེས་འབྲང་གསུངས། །

ngödrub lobpön jé drang sung

Come from following the teacher,

དེ་བས་དེ་ལ་བརྙས་པ་ནི། །

dewé dé la nyepa ni

So to disparage him or her

རྩ་བའི་ལྟུང་བ་དང་པོར་བཤད། །

tsawé tungwa dangpor shé

Is explained as the first root downfall.

དང་པོ་ཕོག་པ་མཐོལ་ལོ་བཤགས། །

dangpo pokpa tol lo shak

All breaches of this, the first, I openly admit and confess!

བདེ་གཤེགས་བཀའ་ལས་འདས་པ་ནི། །

deshek ka lé depa ni

To transgress the words of the sugatas

ལྟུང་བ་གཉིས་པ་ཡིན་པར་བཤད། །

tungwa nyipa yinpar shé

Is taught to be the second downfall.

གཉིས་པ་ཕོག་པ་མཐོལ་ལོ་བཤགས། །

nyipa pokpa tol lo shak

All breaches of this, the second, I openly admit and confess!

རྡོ་རྗེའི་སྤུན་ལ་ཁྲོས་ནས་ནི། །

dorjé pün la trö né ni

Out of anger, to speak ill

ཉེས་པར་བརྗོད་པ་གསུམ་པ་ཡིན། །

nyepar jöpa sumpa yin

Of one's vajra siblings is the third.

གསུམ་པ་ཕོག་པ་མཐོལ་ལོ་བཤགས། །

sumpa pokpa tol lo shak

All breaches of this, the third, I openly admit and confess!

སེམས་ཅན་རྣམས་ལ་བྱམས་པ་སྤངས། །

semchen nam la jampa pang

To abandon love for sentient beings

བཞི་པ་ཡིན་པར་རྒྱལ་བས་གསུངས། །

shyipa yinpar gyalwé sung

Is the fourth, the victorious ones say.

བཞི་པ་ཕོག་པ་མཐོལ་ལོ་བཤགས། །

shyipa pokpa tol lo shak

All breaches of this, the fourth, I openly admit and confess!

ཆོས་ཀྱི་རྩ་བ་བྱང་ཆུབ་སེམས། །

chö kyi tsawa changchub sem

The root of Dharma is bodhicitta —

དེ་སྤོང་བ་ནི་ལྔ་པ་ཡིན། །

dé pongwa ni ngapa yin

To abandon which is the fifth.

ལྔ་པ་ཕོག་པ་མཐོལ་ལོ་བཤགས། །

ngapa pokpa tol lo shak

All breaches of this, the fifth, I openly admit and confess!

རང་ངམ་གཞན་གྱི་གྲུབ་པའི་མཐའ། །

rang ngam shyen gyi drubpé ta

To disparage the tenets

ཆོས་ལ་སྨོད་པ་དྲུག་པ་ཡིན། །

chö la möpa drukpa yin

Of one's own or others' traditions is the sixth.

དྲུག་པ་ཕོག་པ་མཐོལ་ལོ་བཤགས། །

drukpa pokpa tol lo shak

All breaches of this, the sixth, I openly admit and confess!

ཡོངས་སུ་མ་སྨིན་སེམས་ཅན་ལ། །

yongsu ma min semchen la

To disclose secrets to beings

གསང་བ་སྒྲོགས་པ་བདུན་པ་ཡིན། །

sangwa drokpa dünpa yin

Who are not fully matured is the seventh.

བདུན་པ་ཕོག་པ་མཐོལ་ལོ་བཤགས། །

dünpa pokpa tol lo shak

All breaches of this, the seventh, I openly admit and confess!

ཕུང་པོ་སངས་རྒྱས་ལྔའི་བདག་ཉིད། །

pungpo sangye ngé daknyi

To abuse the psycho-physical aggregates,

དེ་ལ་སྨོད་པ་བརྒྱད་པ་ཡིན། །

dé la möpa gyepa yin

Which are by nature the five buddhas, is the eighth.

བརྒྱད་པ་ཕོག་པ་མཐོལ་ལོ་བཤགས། །

gyepa pokpa tol lo shak

All breaches of this, the eighth, I openly admit and confess!

རང་བཞིན་དག་པའི་ཆོས་རྣམས་ལ། །

rangshyin dakpé chö nam la

To have doubts about the natural purity

སོམ་ཉི་ཟ་བ་དགུ་པ་ཡིན། །

somnyi zawa gupa yin

Of all phenomena is the ninth.

དགུ་པ་ཕོག་པ་མཐོལ་ལོ་བཤགས། །

gupa pokpa tol lo shak

All breaches of this, the ninth, I openly admit and confess!

གདུག་ལ་རྟག་ཏུ་བྱམས་ལྡན་པ། །

duk la taktu jam denpa

To show only affection to the wicked

བྱེད་པ་དེ་ནི་བཅུ་པར་འདོད། །

jepa dé ni chupar dö

Is said to be the tenth.

བཅུ་པ་ཕོག་པ་མཐོལ་ལོ་བཤགས། །

chupa pokpa tol lo shak

All breaches of this, the tenth, I openly admit and confess!

མིང་སོགས་བྲལ་བའི་ཆོས་རྣམས་ལ། །

ming sok dralwé chö nam la

To conceptualize phenomena,

དེར་རྟོག་པ་ནི་བཅུ་གཅིག་པ། །

der tokpa ni chuchikpa

Which are unnameable and so on, is the eleventh.

བཅུ་གཅིག་ཕོག་པ་མཐོལ་ལོ་བཤགས། །

chuchik pokpa tol lo shak

All breaches of this, the eleventh, I openly admit and confess!

སེམས་ཅན་དད་དང་ལྡན་པ་ལ། །

semchen dé dang denpa la

To cause those beings who have faith

སེམས་སུན་འབྱིན་པ་བཅུ་གཉིས་པ། །

sem sünjinpa chunyipa

To grow disillusioned is the twelfth.

བཅུ་གཉིས་ཕོག་པ་མཐོལ་ལོ་བཤགས། །

chunyi pokpa tol lo shak

All breaches of this, the twelfth, I openly admit and confess!

དམ་ཚིག་རྫས་ནི་ཇི་བཞིན་ཉིད། །

damtsik dzé ni jishyin nyi

Not to rely upon the samaya substances

མི་བསྟེན་པ་དེ་བཅུ་གསུམ་པ། །

mi tenpa dé chusumpa

As one should is the thirteenth.

བཅུ་གསུམ་ཕོག་པ་མཐོལ་ལོ་བཤགས། །

chusum pokpa tol lo shak

All breaches of this, the thirteenth, I openly admit and confess!

ཤེས་རབ་རང་བཞིན་བུད་མེད་ལ། །

sherab rangshyin bümé la

To disparage women, who are by nature wisdom,

སྨོད་པར་བྱེད་པ་བཅུ་བཞི་པ། །

möpar jepa chushyipa

Is the fourteenth.

བཅུ་བཞི་ཕོག་པ་མཐོལ་ལོ་བཤགས། །

chushyi pokpa tol lo shak

All breaches of this, the fourteenth, I openly admit and confess!

སྔགས་པས་འདི་དག་སྤངས་ནས་ནི། །

ngakpé didak pang né ni

The mantra practitioner who avoids all these [downfalls]

དངོས་གྲུབ་ངེས་པར་ཐོབ་པར་འགྱུར། །

ngödrub ngepar tobpar gyur

Will certainly attain accomplishment.

གཞན་དུ་དམ་ཚིག་ལས་ཉམས་ན། །

shyendu damtsik lé nyam na

Otherwise, should you fail to keep your commitments

ཉམས་པ་བདུད་ཀྱིས་གཟུང་བར་འགྱུར། །

nyampa dü kyi zungwar gyur

You will be caught by the demon of downfall,

དེ་ནས་སྡུག་བསྔལ་མྱོང་འགྱུར་ཞིང༌། །

dené dukngal nyong gyur shying

And will thus experience suffering.

ཐུར་དུ་བལྟས་ཏེ་དམྱལ་བར་འགྲོ། །

turdu té té nyalwar dro

Brought down, you will descend to the hells.

དེ་བས་ང་རྒྱལ་བཅོམ་ནས་ནི། །

dewé ngagyal chom né ni

Subjugate pride, therefore,

བདག་ཉིད་མ་འཁྲུལ་ཤེས་པར་བྱ། །

daknyi ma trul shepar ja

And know yourself to be unconfused.

མཉམ་པར་བཞག་པས་བླ་མ་ལ། །

nyampar shyakpé lama la

With whatever you can afford,

ཅི་འབྱོར་པ་ཡིས་མཆོད་བྱས་ནས། །

chi jorpa yi chöjé né

Make offerings to the guru in the Sage's presence.

གསུམ་ལ་སྐྱབས་འགྲོ་ནས་བརྩམས་ཏེ། །

sum la kyamdro né tsam té

Begin by taking refuge in the Three [[[Jewels]]],

བྱང་ཆུབ་སེམས་སོགས་སྡོམ་པ་ནི། །

changchub sem sok dompa ni

And, as a mantra practitioner,

གལ་ཏེ་བདག་ལ་ཕན་འདོད་ན། །

galté dak la pen dö na

Should you wish to benefit yourself, apply effort

སྔགས་པས་འབད་དེ་གཟུང་བར་བྱ། །

ngakpé bé dé zungwar ja

And uphold the bodhisattva vows and the rest.

རྡོ་རྗེ་ཐེག་པའི་རྩ་བའི་ལྟུང་བ་སློབ་དཔོན་ཆེན་པོ་རྟ་དབྱངས་ཀྱིས་མཛད་པ་རྫོགས་སོ།། །།

This concludes The Root Downfalls of the Vajra Vehicle composed by the great ācārya Aśvaghoṣa.
