Suhṛllekha 24 Cited in the Ṭippaṇī of the Subāhuparipṛcchātantra Dorji Wangchuk (Universität Hamburg) December 19, 2021 Chr. Lindtner in his studies and translation of Nāgārjuna’s works states the following (italicization is mine):1 I have only come across two quotations in Indian śātras from the Suhṛllekha. The first occurs in Candrakīrti’s Caṭuḥśaṭakaṭīkā (Pek. ed. 5266,Ya, fol. 113b), with out any indication of source. It is v. 43. ln addition, SL 55 and 104 are quoted in Bodhibhadra’s Samādhisaṃbhāraparivarta(Derge ed. 3924, Ki, fol. 85b). The numbering of the verses seems to be the same as that of, forexample, Heinrich Wenzel’s German translation of the Suhṛllekha. 2 The verse no. 43 cited by Candrakīrti would correspond to verse no. 44 of the Sanskrit text edited by PéterDániel Szántó:3 lavaṇapalam ambumātraṃdūṣayati yathā na tu hradaṃ gaṅgāyāḥ | pāpaṃ karmāpi tathā stokaṃ vipule ca kuśalamūle jñeyam ||; Tib. (TENZIN 2002: 170):4 lan tshwa srang ’gas chu ni nyung ngu zhig || ro bskyur bgyid kyi gangga’i (sic) klung min ltar || de bzhin sdigpa’i las ni chung ngu yang || dge ba’i rtsa ba yang la mkhyen par bgyi ||. Similarly, Bodhibhadra’s first citation would correspond to Suhṛllekha 56 (SZÁNTÓ 2021: 5): āyuṣi bahūpasarge vātāhatatoyabudbudā nityatare | ucchvasya niśvasati yat supto vā yad vibudhyate tac citram ||; Tib. (TENZIN 2002: 174): tshe ni gnod mang rlung gis btab pa yi || chu yi chu bur bas kyang mi rtag na || dbugs rdub dbugs ’byung gnyid kyis log pa las || sad khom gang lags de ni ngo mtshar che ||. Bodhibhadra’s second citation would correspond to Suhṛllekha 106 (SZÁNTÓ 2021: 9): śīladhyānajñānaiḥ śamadamavimalaṃ vṛṇīṣva nirvāṇākhyam | padam ajaram amaram akṣayam ambho’niladharaṇidahanaśaśiravirahitam ||; Tib. (TENZIN 2002: 191): tshul khrims dag dang bsam gtan shes rab kyis || mya ngan ’das zhi dul ba dri med pa’i || go ’phang mi rga mi ’chi zad mi ’tshal || sa chu me rlung nyi zla bral thob mdzod ||. Thanks to the digital age, we are now in a better position and we may find more verses of the Suhṛllekha cited by Indian authors. I did not make any attempts to search but merely happened to stumble upon another verse (i.e. Suhṛllekha 24) cited in the *Subāhuparipṛcchātantrapadārthaṭippaṇī most probably by Buddhaguhya (D2672, rGyud, vol. Thu, fol. 83a6–7; P3497, rGyud-’grel, vol. Chu, fol. 95a1–2; B, vol.36, p. 222.6–9): ’dod pa rnams ni phung ba bskyed pa ste || rgyal ba’i dbang poskimpa’i ’bras ’drar gsungs ||de dag spang bya de yi [D, de’i P] lcags sgrog gis || ’khor ba’i brtson rar ’jig rten ’di dag bcings ||; cf. Tib. (TENZIN 2002: 164): ’dod pa rnams ni phung khrol bskyed pa ste || rgyal ba’i dbang poskimpa’i ’bras ’drar gsungs ||de dag spang bgyi de yi lcags sgrog gis || ’khor ba’i brtson rar ’jig rten ’di dag bcings ||. The corresponding Sanskrit text (SZÁNTÓ 2021: 3) reads: kāmā hy anarthajanakāḥ kiṃpākaphalopamā jinendreṇoktāḥ | tyājyās te tannigaḍair baddhaḥ saṃsāracārake loko ’yam ||. The lDan dkar ma records only one commentary of the Subāhuparipṛcchātantra (lHan 326) but it is not clear if that is to be identified with our Ṭippaṇī (i.e. D2672; P3497) which cites Suhṛllekha 24. The ’Phang thang ma, on the other hand, records three commentaries on the Subāhuparipṛcchātantra (’Phang 929, 930, 931) and according to Herrmann-Pfandt, our Ṭippaṇī would correspond with ’Phang 929. 5 The authorship of the Ṭippaṇī is not clear but the commentary could have been composed by Buddhaguhya.
