The proclaimed Dalai Lama pursued education under the Tibetan system of monastic education in Potala palace, Lhasa. Three tutors were allotted to him, for his lessons. Reading of texts; penmanship; memorisation of Buddhist texts; and dialectics constituted the course of his training. The curriculum covered five major subjects – logic, Tibetan art and culture, Sanskrit, medicine, and Buddhist philosophy – and five minor subjects – poetry, music and drama, astrology, metre and phrasing, and synonyms. Although no subject was construed as expendable, yet Buddhist philosophy, logic and dialectics held more prominence over other subjects since the award of the doctorate degree was contingent on successful traversing of the latter three cognate subjects. However, Gyatso believed that despite such appreciable array of curriculum, its practical application by any leader of country during the late 20th century was ‘totally inappropriate’i.
