A Prayer for the Spread of the Omniscient Buddha's Teachings

བླ་མ་དང་སངས་རྒྱས་བྱང་ཆུབ་སེམས་དཔའ་ཐམས་ཅད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །
Homage to the guru and all the buddhas and bodhisattvas!
བསྐལ་བཟང་སངས་རྒྱས་སྟོང་ལས་ཁྱད་པར་དུ། །
kalzang sangye tong lé khyepardu
Among the thousand buddhas of this fortunate age,
ངོ་མཚར་ཨུ་དུམ་ཝཱ་ར་ལྟར་འཕགས་ཤིང༌། །
ngotsar u dum wa ra tar pak shing
You are the most wondrous and majestic, as rare as an uḍumbara flower,
རྩོད་པའི་དུས་འདིར་ཞིང་ཁམས་ཡོངས་བཟུང་བ། །
tsöpé dü dir shyingkham yong zungwa
You who care for our world during this age of conflict,
ཐུབ་མཆོག་དོན་ཀུན་གྲུབ་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །
tub chok dön kün drub la chaktsal lo
Mighty sage, Siddhārtha, to you I pay homage!
ཕྱོགས་བཅུའི་སངས་རྒྱས་བྱང་སེམས་ཉན་རང་དང༌། །
chok chü sangye changsem nyenrang dang
All you buddhas, bodhisattvas, śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas in all directions,
འཇམ་དབྱངས་སྤྱན་གཟིགས་ཕྱག་ན་རྡོ་རྗེ་འཛིན། །
jamyang chenzik chak na dorjé dzin
Great bodhisattvas, Mañjuśrī, Avalokiteśvara,
བྱམས་པ་ལ་སོགས་བྱང་ཆུབ་སེམས་དཔའ་དང༌། །
jampa lasok changchub sempa dang
Vajrapāṇi, Maitreya and the rest,
གནས་བརྟན་བཅུ་དྲུག་གཏད་རབས་ཆེན་པོ་བདུན། །
neten chudruk té rab chenpo dün
Together with the sixteen sthaviras and seven great patriarchs,
འཛམ་གླིང་རྒྱན་མཆོག་རྨད་བྱུང་སློབ་དཔོན་ཆེ། །
dzamling gyen chok mejung lobpön ché
Six ornaments1 and two supreme ones2 of this world, the two marvellous ācāryas,3
རྣལ་འབྱོར་དབང་ཕྱུག་བརྒྱད་ཅུ་རྩ་བཞི་སོགས། །
naljor wangchuk gyechu tsa shyi sok
Eighty-four mahāsiddhas, and the rest,
ཁྱད་པར་བཀའ་དྲིན་མཉམ་མེད་པདྨ་འབྱུང༌། །
khyepar kadrin nyammé pema jung
And especially, the Lotus-born Guru, whose kindness is beyond compare,
ཞི་འཚོ་ཁྲི་སྲོང་བཻ་རོ་ཨ་ཏི་ཤ། །
Śāntarakṣita, Trisong Detsen, Vairotsana and Atiśa,
གོང་མ་རྣམ་ལྔ་མར་མི་དྭགས་པོ་རྗེ། །
gongma nam nga mar mi dakpo jé
Five Sakya Patriarchs,4 Marpa, Milarepa and Gampopa,
འཇམ་དབྱངས་བླ་མ་ལ་སོགས་རྒྱ་བོད་ཀྱི། །
Lama Tsongkhapa, Mañjughoṣa in person, and all the rest,
མཁས་དང་གྲུབ་པའི་རིག་འཛིན་ཚོགས་རྣམས་དང༌། །
khé dang drubpé rigdzin tsok nam dang
All you great learned and accomplished vidyādharas of India and Tibet,
ཡི་དམ་ཞི་ཁྲོ་མཁའ་འགྲོ་ཆོས་སྐྱོང་སོགས། །
yidam shyitro khandro chökyong sok
And all you peaceful and wrathful yidam deities, ḍākinīs and dharmapālas—
ཐུགས་དམ་གནད་ནས་བསྐུལ་ལོ་ཐུགས་རྗེས་དགོངས། །
tukdam né né kul lo tukjé gong
We invoke you! Turn your wisdom minds towards us, and look upon us with compassion!
ཐུབ་བསྟན་འདུལ་བ་མདོ་སྡེ་མངོན་པ་དང༌། །
tubten dulwa dodé ngönpa dang
All the teachings of the Buddha—Vinaya, Sūtra, Abhidharma,
གསང་སྔགས་རྒྱུད་སྡེ་ཆེན་པོ་རྣམ་པ་བཞི། །
sang ngak gyüdé chenpo nampa shyi
The four classes of tantra within the Secret Mantra,
གངས་ལྗོངས་བཤད་བརྒྱུད་ཀ་ཆེན་བཅུ་པོ་དང༌། །
gangjong shé gyü ka chen chupo dang
The teachings of the ten great pillars of the study lineage5 in the Land of Snows,
སྒྲུབ་བརྒྱུད་ཤིང་རྟ་ཆེ་བརྒྱད་ལ་སོགས་པ། །
drubgyü shingta ché gyé lasokpa
And the eight great chariots of the practice lineage,6
ཐུབ་བསྟན་མདོ་དང་སྔགས་ཀྱི་ཚུལ་མཐའ་དག །
tubten do dang ngak kyi tsul tadak
All the sūtra and mantra traditions of the Buddha’s teachings—
ཤིན་ཏུ་ཉམས་པར་གྱུར་པ་འདི་ལ་གཟིགས། །
shintu nyampar gyurpa di la zik
Look now and see the extent to which they have all declined!
ངེས་འབྱུང་ཚུལ་ཁྲིམས་ངུར་སྨྲིག་རྒྱལ་མཚན་ཐོགས། །
ngejung tsultrim ngurmik gyaltsen tok
The saffron-robed saṅgha, upholders of the victory banner of discipline and renunciation,
གཞན་ཕན་ཟོལ་མེད་བྱང་ཆུབ་སེམས་དཔའ་དང༌། །
shyenpen zolmé changchub sempa dang
Bodhisattvas who, without pretense or deception, genuinely seek to benefit others,
དམ་ཚིག་ལྡན་ཞིང་བསྐྱེད་རྫོགས་རིག་སྔགས་འཆང༌། །
damtsik den shying kyedzok rik ngak chang
And holders of awareness mantras who maintain the commitments, and practise generation and completion—
མཚན་ཉིད་ལྡན་པ་རི་མོའི་མར་མེ་ལྟར། །
tsennyi denpa rimö marmé tar
Look how these practitioners have been reduced to pale imitations of the real thing, like a mere drawing of a butter lamp!
གྱུར་པ་འདི་ལ་ཡེ་ཤེས་སྤྱན་ལྡན་རྣམས། །
gyurpa di la yeshe chenden nam
Look upon us now with your eyes of wisdom, and care for us in your compassion, we pray!
ངེས་པར་དགོངས་ལ་ཐུགས་རྗེས་བསྐྱབ་ཏུ་གསོལ། །
ngepar gong la tukjé kyab tu sol
Beings of this evil age with its five degenerations,
དུས་ངན་སྙིགས་མ་ལྔ་བདོའི་སེམས་ཅན་རྣམས། །
dü ngen nyikma nga dö semchen nam
Are caught in the bonds of turbulent and destructive emotions, their cravings and desires.
ཉོན་མོངས་སྟོབས་དྲག་འདོད་སྲེད་འཆིང་བས་བཅིངས། །
nyönmong tob drak dö sé chingwé ching
The followers of the teachings fight amongst themselves,
བསྟན་ལ་ཞུགས་རྣམས་ཕྲག་དོག་རླུང་དམར་གྱིས། །
ten la shyuk nam trakdok lungmar gyi
Spurred on by the fierce winds of jealousy,
བསྟན་པ་ནང་དཀྲུགས་ལྟ་བའི་སྙིགས་མ་རྒྱས། །
tenpa nang truk tawé nyikma gyé
And degenerate views are widespread.
རྩོད་པ་ཅན་དུ་གྱུར་པས་བསྟན་སེལ་གྱི། །
tsöpachen du gyurpé ten sel gyi
Through these defilements, brought about by conflicts within the tradition,
གྲིབ་ཀྱིས་ཆོས་སྐྱོང་དཀར་ཕྱོགས་སྲུང་མ་གཡེལ། །
drib kyi chökyong karchok sungma yel
The Dharma protectors, guardians of all that is positive, have turned away from us,
རྒྱལ་ཁམས་ཀུན་ཏུ་ལྷ་མིན་ཀླ་ཀློས་ཁེངས། །
gyalkham küntu lhamin lalö kheng
While warrior-like asuras and barbarians fill the world—
འདི་དང་འདི་འདྲར་གྱུར་པས་བསྟན་པ་བསྣུབས། །
di dang didrar gyurpé tenpa nub
In these and other ways, the teachings have declined.
ཀྱེ་མ་ཀྱི་ཧུད་མགོན་པོ་ཐུགས་རྗེ་ཅན། །
Kyema Kyihü! O compassionate protectors!
ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ཐུགས་དམ་མཐུ་རྩལ་སྟོབས་བསྐྱེད་ལ། །
khyö nam tukdam tutsal tob kyé la
Increase the power and strength of your sacred commitments!
དུས་ངན་སྐྱོ་བས་ཞུམ་པ་ཅི་ལ་མངའ། །
dü ngen kyowé shyumpa chi la nga
Why would you be discouraged by the sadness of these evil times?
སྟོབས་བཅུའི་དབང་ཕྱུག་དབང་བཅུ་མངའ་བས་ན། །
tob chü wangchuk wang chu ngawé na
Since you are masters of the ten strengths and possessors of the ten powers,
བསྟན་པ་ཉམས་པ་འདི་དག་སོར་ཆུད་ཅིང༌། །
tenpa nyampa didak sorchü ching
You must surely heal and restore the teachings.
མཁས་བཙུན་གྲུབ་ཐོབ་ཚད་མར་གྱུར་པ་ནི། །
khé tsün drubtob tsemar gyurpa ni
Send us genuine teachers who are learned, disciplined and accomplished,
མང་པོར་སྤྲུལ་ནས་བསྟན་པ་གསོ་བར་མཛོད། །
mangpor trul né tenpa sowar dzö
To breathe fresh life into the Buddhadharma!
འཕགས་བོད་གཉིས་སུ་རྫོགས་ལྡན་ཕྱི་མ་ཡི། །
pak bö nyi su dzokden chima yi
In both India and Tibet, may the precious lamps of joyful celebration,
དགའ་སྟོན་རིན་ཆེན་སྒྲོན་མེ་སྦར་བ་དང༌། །
gatön rinchen drönmé barwa dang
Be set ablaze, to usher in another golden age,
རྒྱལ་བསྟན་རིས་མེད་པད་ཚལ་དར་ལ་བབ། །
gyalten rimé petsal dar la bab
And may the non-sectarian, lotus-like teachings of the Buddha, flourish and blossom.
དེ་ལ་འཁུ་བའི་ཚོགས་ཀྱི་སེམས་བསྒྱུར་ཞིང༌། །
dé la khuwé tsok kyi sem gyur shying
May the minds of those who harbour ill-will towards the teachings be changed,
ཀུན་ཀྱང་བསྟན་ལ་འདུན་དང་དགེ་བཅུར་སྤྱོད། །
kün kyang ten la dün dang gé chur chö
And filled with inspiration to practise the ten virtuous actions.
བསྟན་འཛིན་དགེ་འདུན་སྡེ་ཡིས་འཛམ་གླིང་ཁྱབ། །
tendzin gendün dé yi dzamling khyab
May the saṅgha, the holders of the teachings, fill this world of ours,
བཤད་དང་སྒྲུབ་པ་དར་ཞིང་རྒྱས་པར་ཤོག །
shé dang drubpa dar shying gyepar shok
And study and practice increase and spread.
གཙུག་ལག་ཁང་རྣམས་མཆོད་པའི་སྤྲིན་ཚོགས་རྒྱས། །
tsuklakhang nam chöpé trin tsok gyé
May vast clouds of offerings fill all monasteries and temples,
དམ་པའི་ཆོས་ཀྱི་རྔ་ཆེན་རབ་ཏུ་སྒྲོགས། །
dampé chö kyi nga chen rabtu drok
And the great drum of the Dharma resound far and wide,
མུ་སྟེགས་གླང་པོའི་ཀླད་པ་འགེམས་བྱེད་ཅིང༌། །
mutek langpö lepa gem jé ching
Annihilating the deluded arguments of the tīrthikas,
ཐུབ་བསྟན་ཕྱོགས་ལས་རྣམ་པར་རྒྱལ་གྱུར་ཅིག །
tubten chok lé nampar gyal gyur chik
And sounding the victory of the Buddhadharma in all directions.
བསྟན་འཛིན་སྐྱེས་རྣམས་ཞབས་པད་བརྟན་པ་དང༌། །
tendzin kyé nam shyabpé tenpa dang
May the lives of all the holders of the teachings be secure,
བསྟན་པའི་སྦྱིན་བདག་ཚེ་དང་བསོད་ནམས་འཕེལ། །
tenpé jindak tsé dang sönam pel
And may the lives and merits of benefactors increase,
བསྟན་ལ་གནོད་རྣམས་མིང་གི་ལྷག་མར་གྱུར། །
ten la nö nam ming gi lhakmar gyur
May even the names of those who would harm the teachings disappear,
བསྟན་པའི་རྒྱལ་མཚན་ཕྱོགས་བཅུར་སྒྲེངས་གྱུར་ཅིག །
tenpé gyaltsen chok chur dreng gyur chik
And may the victory banner of the teachings be raised in all directions!
ཅེས་པའང་ཆོས་ཀྱི་བློ་གྲོས་པས་འཕགས་ཡུལ་རྡོ་རྗེ་གདན་གྱི་བྱང་ཆུབ་ཤིང་དྲུང་དུ་གང་དྲན་ཤར་མར་བྲིས་པ་འདི་བཞིན་འགྲུབ་པར་བྱིན་གྱིས་བརླབ་ཏུ་གསོལ། སརྦ་དཱ་མངྒ་ལཾ།། །།
Chökyi Lodrö wrote down whatever came to mind at the foot of the bodhi tree in Vajrāsana (Bodhgayā) in the noble land of India. May these words be blessed so that they all come true. Sarva maṅgalaṃ!
