The Flower Garland Sutra Says:

"With ten kinds of meditation practice, the Bodhisattvas observe all things spiritual:

  1. All things are impermanent
  2. All things are full of suffering
  3. All things are empty
  4. All things are without a self
  5. All things are innate and uncreated
  6. All things are flavorless
  7. All things are not the same as their names
  8. All things are without a fixed place
  9. All things are not distinct and separate
  10. All things are without solidity or substance

Bodhisattvas are encouraged to observe and study these ten things:

  1. The spiritual realm of living beings
  2. The realm of spiritual reality
  3. The realm of the world
  4. The realm of the earth
  5. The realm of water
  6. The realm of fire
  7. The realm of wind
  8. The realm of desire
  9. The realm of form
  10. The realm of formlessness

This is to make Bodhisattvas wisdom and insight turn clear and penetrating so that they grasp what they hear without having to depend upon others to explain it."
