The Throat Chakra contains a 16 petalled lotus.

These petals represent the sub-channels that flow out at the throat from the three main energy channels of our body.

The Throat Chakra represents our Perceptions.

This is because we speak based on our perceptions of the outside world.

This means that the body part associated with Padma Energy is the throat and vocal chords.

Communication also plays a large role in attracting other people and other things to us. Communication and relationship are intimately tied together.

As an example, the most important area in good marital relationships, that is often cited, is the couple's ability to effectively communicate with each other.

We also need to pay attention to our speech and the effects that speech has on ourselves and others.

As part of speech, the sense associated with Padma is sound, because sound is created via the vocal chords and the breath. This means that mindfulness of sound is also part of the practices related to Padma energy and wisdom.

This also includes paying attention to our breathing which enters and leaves our lungs via the throat.

It includes the evenness and depth of our breathing as well. So mindfulness of the breath, like that which we practice in Shamata meditation, becomes a part of this practice.

That Padma involves the throat and Ratna the digestive system shows the difference between Padma energy and Ratna energy. Padma energy deals with Ingestion and Ratna energy deals with Digestion.

With Padma energy, we take things in. After that, we determine the "flavour" of what we have taken in and that is where Ratna energy comes into play.

Therefore the practices relating to the throat chakra have to do with what we take in or consume.

It not only includes what we "swallow", It also involves paying attention to the first things that we notice in people and objects in the outside world.

I put swallow in quotations, because it also includes the ideas and notions that we take in from others as well. We pay attention to all that attracts us towards others and what attracts us towards different things in the outside world, including ideas, attitudes, and points of view.
