Stone Buddha statues of Tubo Period found 1st time in Tibet
Nineteen rock line-engraving statues belonging to the Tubo Period (during the 7th-9th century) have been found in Tibet, according to archeologists.
Since it is the first time that such statues are found in Tibet, the statues are regarded as significant to study the spread of Buddhism in eastern Tibet. These statues were found in Randui Village, Chamdo Prefecture, eastern Tibet, by archeologists from the Shaanxi Provincial Archeology Institute, Tibet Autonomous Regional Cultural Relics Protection Research Center and the Archeological Team of Northwest University.
Zhang Jianlin, deputy director of the Shaanxi Provincial Archeology Institute, said that the statues feature Buddha Vairocana and Bodhisattvas.
The modeling and clothing of the Buddhas feature the characteristics of Buddha statues of the Tubo Period.
