Vriji
[跋耆・跋祇] (Skt; Pali Vajji; Jpn Baggi)

Also known as Vrijji. One of the sixteen great states of India in Shakyamuni's time. Well known for its republican form of government, Vriji was located north of the Ganges River in northeastern India, straddling the present-day India-Nepal border. Vriji was a confederacy of the Licchavi, Videha, and other tribes, and Vaishaliwas one of its major cities. Representatives of the confederacy met to discuss and decide affairs of state by consensus. Vriji was a rival of the Magadha kingdom to its south. It is thought that King Ajatashatru of Magadha conquered it after a protracted war, and that he managed to create dissension within the Vriji confederacy, finally overthrowing it. According to the Long Agama Sutra, Shakyamuni tried to dissuade Ajatashatru from his attempts to conquer Vriji.
