White Umbrella Goddess mantra: Meaning and Benefits

The White Umbrella Goddess mantra is one of the popular mantras of the Vajrayana school of Buddhism. Tantric practitioners regularly chant mantras for protection, good luck and to remove negative energies within and around a person.


Who is White Umbrella Goddess?


White Umbrella Goddess (Sanskrit: Ushnisha SitatapatraTibetan: Dukkar) is a powerful goddess known mainly in Tibetan Buddhism.

It is said that Ushnisha Sitatapatra is one of the female forms of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, so she symbolizes great strength and compassion. An enlightened being with bodhicitta helps all sentient beings to be free from suffering, protects and brings them good luck.

According to the Sitatapatra Sutra, the White Umbrella Goddess arose from the sacred crown of Shakyamuni Buddha while she was in the “paradise” of Trayastrimsa (Tāvatiṃsa in Pali), the second pure land of Kamadhatu, one of the dynasties. Trailokya or Three Holy Realms in Buddhist cosmology.

“At that time Shakyamuni Buddha incarnated as Uṣṇīṣa-rājan standing under a white umbrella, his body like a white umbrella covering all these three thousand Great Thousand Worlds.”

She is worshiped in both the Mahayana and Vajrayana traditions. Possibly, the White Umbrella Goddess is one of the most complex goddesses of the Tibetan tantric school. Like many other Buddhist deities, she is crowned and decorated like a bodhisattva. In Mahayana Buddhism, the White Umbrella Goddess is also recognized as a type of goddess Tara of the Vairocana family.


Symbolic meaning


Like the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, the White Umbrella Goddess manifests in many complex forms: She has a thousand faces, arms and legs, or is simply a beautiful feminine deity. The best known symbol is the white parachute.

Ushnisha Sitatapatra is often depicted with a white, moon-like skin. On each palm and foot of the Goddess there are eyes to observe and protect all beings in the world. She sees, hears, and helps those who pray to Her.

On the white umbrella is a small image of Shakyamuni Buddha. Ushnisha Sitatapatra stepped on gods, hungry ghosts, animals, people, and all kinds of beings. The evil gods (Sanskrit: Asuras) symbolize one’s inner demons that need to be conquered.

She kept an array of tools such as Dharma wheels, vajras, jewels, lotus flowers, bows, swords, etc. But most importantly, a white umbrella symbolizing victory death, demons and negative things.


Hand holding an umbrella: represents the clean white Compassionate Heart to help sentient beings.

Arrow in hand: represents the Dharma to shoot the evil obstacles of sentient beings, making them find good friends.

Hook handle: denotes the meaning of calling the Sea-dragon king often supported.

Anger hand seal: denotes the meaning of subjugating all demons.

Hand holding a bow: denotes the meaning of helping sentient beings achieve their career.

Hand holding a sword: represents Wisdom to cut off all afflictions.


Her umbrella shows the ability to protect sentient beings from natural disasters, diseases, etc. She is white because the main means she performs is the enlightened energy of purely.


Benefits of Chanting the Sitatapatra White Umbrella Goddess mantra


Sitatapatra White Umbrella Goddess mantra has the effect of curing diseases, dispelling interferences that cause mental harm, preventing natural disasters, bringing luck and wealth in life. In addition, those who regularly chant this mantra will be protected from black magic, charms that others harm.

In the Sitatapatra Sutra, the benefit of the White Umbrella Goddess mantra is to cut off all evil in a person, drive away evil spirits, and create a positive energy zone around the house.

Whoever recites her mantra will be reborn in the pure lands of the buddhas, such as the Pure land of Amitabha Buddha. According to Lama Zopa Rinpoche, one of the fastest ways to receive the protection of Ushnisha Sitatapatra is to chant mantras or hang pictures of her in the house.
