Who is The Dalai Lama?
Between the 17th century and 1959, the Dalai Lama was not only the head of the Tibetan Government, administering a large portion of the country from the capital Lhasa, but a spiritual leader revered among Tibetans. According to Wikipedia

The Dalai Lama is believed to be the current incarnation of a long line of Tulkus, or Buddhist Masters, who have become exempt from the wheel of death and rebirth. These ascended masters have chosen of their own free will to be reborn to this place in order to teach humanity.

Tenzin Gyatso, the current or 14th Dalai Lama, was born in 1935 and was proclaimed the tulku or rebirth of the thirteenth Dalai Lama at the age of two.

“His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, is both the head of state and the spiritual leader of Tibet…. At the age of two [he] was recognized as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, Thubten Gyatso. The Dalai Lamas are believed to be manifestations of Avalokiteshvara or Chenrezig, the Bodhisattva of Compassion and patron saint of Tibet. Bodhisattvas are enlightened beings who have postponed their own nirvana and chosen to take rebirth in order to serve humanity”. [1]

However Beijing has long maintained that Tibet is an historical and inviolable part of China and the Chinese army invaded Tibet in 1950. One month later on 17th November 1950, at the age of fifteen, Tenzin Gyatso was thrust onto the world stage and formally enthroned as Dalai Lama. In 1959 he fled through the mountains to India following a failed uprising and the collapse of the Tibetan resistance movement. Since then he has presided over the Central Tibetan Administration which, considers itself to be a government in exile, and is currently based in Dharamshala (literally "rest house"), a small town in the foothills of the Himalayas in northern India.

Travel, Influence and Awards
A noted public speaker worldwide, Tenzin Gyatso, who considers himself half-Marxist, half-Buddhist [1B], is often described as charismatic. He is the first Dalai Lama to travel to the West (undertaking a series of tours of 46 nations since 1967) where he seeks to spread Buddhist teachings and to promote ethics and interfaith harmony. According to the site of the Nobel Peace Prize, The Dalai Lama has met with religious leaders from

“… the United States, Canada, Western Europe, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, Mongolia, Greece, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Nepal, Costa Rica, Mexico, the Vatican, China and Australia.” [2]

He was the keynote speaker at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. on September 11th 2003, the second anniversary of the terrorist attack on America. Accompanied by five Tibetan Lamas from his New York Monastery, he officially began with Buddhist ritual chanting followed by a talk to an audience of 7,000 on “Cultivating Peace as an Antidote to Violence”.

Time Magazine claims “Though he is a spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama also holds a doctorate in philosophy. He rejects anything that has been disproved by scientific inquiry and dismisses Buddhist teachings not verified by science“. [29d]

In the years 2005 and 2008, Time Magazine placed The Dalai Lama on its list of the world's 100 most influential people. While the 2008 summary was written by Deepak Chopra, [3] the magazine’s April 18, 2005 article on the Dalai Lama called He Belongs to the World, was written by actor Richard Gere, a long time Buddhist and supporter of the Dalai Lama. Gere sums it up …[Emphasis Added]

The Dalai Lama, 69, does not belong solely to the Tibetans anymore—he belongs to us all. With a vast and profound knowledge of Buddhism, an open heart and the exceedingly rare ability to touch deeply people of all religions, races and backgrounds, he has emerged over the past half-century as one of the very few universally respected beings on our planet. [4]

You can say that again! The Dalai Lama certainly has wide appeal to the man on the street.. Everyone seems caught up in the spell. He comes across as extremely tolerant and compassionate… A man of peace and a human rights activist. He relates passages relevant to his message from the Sermon on the Mount. What’s not to love?

On April 16, 2004, CBC News Online said

“Since he arrived in Canada this weekend, people can't seem to get enough of the smiling monk with the rock star appeal, and it's no secret why. Behind that grin is one of the most influential voices in the world… When he's in the States, this Nobel Peace Prize winner gets the star treatment. Presidents and celebrities line up to get a private audience and a picture. Tibet's exiled spiritual and temporal leader has become an icon. His message of peace and happiness is more self-help than religion, and that is turning his books into bestsellers and turning him into a celebrity.” [5]

And he gets ever more popular

An Aug 23, 1999 article in The San Diego Union-Tribune said that the Dalai Lama’s

“…appearance in New York's Central Park earlier in August drew a crowd of 40,000 people, compared to 5,000 in a visit he made there in 1991.

One can certainly see why. Besides his constant message of peace and interfaith co-operation, The almost always smiling Dalai Lama has a very appealing side and a legendary sense of humour. Ron Gluckman, a reporter who spent three weeks with the Dalai Lama in 1996, tells of a very human side of the man considered a spiritual leader by millions.. He is an

“incorrigible tinkerer” who was delighted at the discovery of Super Glue.. and “if the schedule allows, he may hide away at his work bench to fiddle with some broken gadget”. He once “amazed and annoyed elders by repairing Tibet's three cars, the legacy of a previous incarnation, and then secretly taking one for a spin”. His sense of humour comes to the fore when he tells why he has two robes.. "I have to have two… even the Dalai Lama does laundry." And referring to his rounded shape, jokes “I think I might be pregnant". [6]

Academia is far from exempt… In February 2007, the Dalai Lama was named Presidential Distinguished Professor at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and received an honorary degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1998.

Apparently very few doors, if any, are closed to this man.. He has met…Dalai-Lama

A delegation of Jewish teachers (in Dharamsala In 1990) for an extensive interfaith dialogue. He has since visited Israel three times and met in 2006 with the Chief Rabbi of Israel..

The late Archbishop of Canterbury Dr. Robert Runcie in 1981, 1984 & 1988, Archbishop Carey in 1993 & 1999 and Archbishop Dr Rowan Williams on the 23rd of May 2008. Most of these visits took place at Lambeth Palace. [7]

Gordon B. Hinckley, late President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons)…

Senior Eastern Orthodox Church, Muslim, Hindu, Jewish, and Sikh officials.

In March 2008 U.S. House Speak Nancy Pelosi and nine other members of the US congress, including senior Republican lawmaker Jim Sensenbrenner Jr., went to Dharamshala and met with the Dalai Lama. Describing Dalai Lama as “the embodiment of non violence”, Ms Pelosi and The US Congressional delegates denounced Beijing’s accusation that Dalai Lama was responsible for “masterminding” the protests across Tibet. [8]

The honours bestowed on the Dalai Lama have come from all over the place, including some very unexpected quarters….

“He has been given awards from the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute, the New York Lawyer's Alliance, the New York Temple of Understanding, the U.N. Environmental Program, the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, the World Management Council, the Norwegian Refugee Council, and the Research Institute of America, among others. He has been made an "honorary citizen" of Houston, Texas and Wheaton, Illinois. In 1979 the mayors of San Francisco and Los Angeles presented him with the keys to both cities. And Jerusalem's Hebrew University made him an "Honorary Fellow" on March 20, 1994”. [9a] [Mikhail Gorbachev was a Roosevelt Institute laureate in 1990.]

He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989, honorary Canadian citizenship in 2006, and, in 2007, the United States Congressional Gold Medal, which is the highest civilian award that the U.S. Congress can give. (The text of the legislation signed by President Bush, said it bestowed the medal to recognize the Dalai Lama’s “many enduring and outstanding contributions to peace, non-violence, human rights and religious understanding,”). In April 2008 the Paris City Council decided to make the Dalai Lama an honorary citizen of the city [9b]

But perhaps most interestingly the “The Simon Wiesenthal Peace Award” was given him in 1996.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center was named after Simon Wiesenthal, the famed ‘Nazi hunter’, who survived several concentration camps, then spent his life bringing Nazi war criminals to justice and searing the Holocaust into the conscience of the world.

The center is an international Jewish human rights organization dedicated to

“…promoting human rights and dignity, standing with Israel, defending the safety of Jews worldwide, and teaching the lessons of the Holocaust for future generations” [10]

Which makes the next section especially disconcerting..

The Dissenting Voices.. Two Issues
However, a few voices have been raised which question the popular image of this ‘man of peace’. One of the issues raised is in regard to a couple of the Dalai Lama’s extremely questionable human connections, which have been documented below. However, while these matters do little but make him quite a hypocrite, it is the second issue.. his belief in the Maitreya and his and teaching of the Kalachakra-Tantra that concern us here. It is those that make him an extremely dangerous man.

But to the lesser of the two evils first..

Issue One.. Bizarre Connections

The Dalai Lama and The Nazis

When the Dalai Lama was awarded “The Simon Wiesenthal Peace Award” in 1996 (above), Rabbi Marvin Hier, founder of the center said

It was a very special event, We had such a turnout, we had to keep people outside. [11]

However the Homepage of the Government of Tibet in Exile has an extremely thought-provoking photograph of the XIV Dalai Lama with several other people, two of whom are Germans… Heinrich Harrer and Bruno Beger. [12]

And who are these men?

An Austrian mountaineer and renowned explorer, Harrer was best known for the years he spent as an adviser, teacher and friend of a young Dalai Lama. He was author of Seven Years in Tibet… a chronicle of his experience with the Dalai Lama over the seven years prior to his exile to India. Seven Years in Tibet was eulogized by Hollywood in a movie of the same name starring Brad Pitt. Harrer also wrote more than 20 books about his adventures, some that include photographs considered to be among the best evidence of traditional Tibetan culture. He made about 40 documentary films and founded a museum about Tibet in Austria.

Dalai-Lama-Heinrich-HarrerHarrer is said to have been

“…confidant and informal tutor to the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, Harrer was afforded access to ceremonies and customs that had been rarely witnessed by Westerners”…

He was both friends with and honoured by the Dalai Lama..

“Harrer was one of the recipients of the International Campaign for Tibet's Light of Truth Award for 2002, presented to Harrer by the Dalai Lama on October 15, 2002 in Graz, Austria. He was honored for his unparalleled mobilization of concern and sympathy for the people of Tibet…” [13]

Heinrich Harrer and the exiled Dalai Lama remained steadfast friends until Harrer’s death on January 7, 2006”. [14]

But this is not simply a touching story of a long lasting friendship between people from widely diverse worlds. What makes this story particularly bizarre is the fact that Heinrich Harrer was a Nazi and an escapee from British prisoner of war camp in India. So how did this Austrian Nazi get to Tibet and become one of the Dalai Lama’s ‘friends’.

In his younger days Harrer was a member of the Sturmabteilung (SA, storm troopers) the infamous "brownshirts" that functioned as a paramilitary organization of the NSDAP – the German Nazi party, and were illegal in Austria at the time. They played a key role in Adolf Hitler's rise to power in the 1930s.

When Austria was annexed by the German regime in March 1938, Harrer joined the SS where he held the rank of Oberscharführer (Sergeant). He also joined the Nazi party that same year and was photographed with Adolf Hitler after the first ascent of the Eige.

According to Stern's report Harrer was quoted as saying,

"It was an estimable reward for us to meet and talk with the Fuehrer. We scaled the northern slope of Eiger, crossed the summit and reached the place wherein the Fuehrer lived." [16]

Harrer was detained by British colonial authorities as an enemy alien, but escaped for good in 1944 after several failed attempts, Making their way to Tibet, Harrer and Aufschnaiter entered Lhasa in February 1946, where he would remain for almost seven years and become a friend of the young Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso. Although there is no evidence that Harrer was personally guilty of ‘War Crimes’ or of any participation in Hitler’s ‘final solution’, the question remains.. How many of the Nazis were ‘innocent’?

The next one certainly wasn’t..

The Dalai Lama and Bruno Beger:
While the exact relationship of Beger to the Dalai Lama is not certain, he was one of the people who having had the “..privilege to live, visit and work in Tibet prior to the Chinese invasion of the country in 1950”, was invited for lunch by the Dalai Lama, “to exchange our experiences and reminiscences of that time”. [17]

Beger who died in 2004, was on the personal staff of SS Heinrich Himmler. He was a German Racial anthropologist who worked for the Ahnenerbe…

Chris Wiley’s article Utopia on the Roof of the World, published in the fall 2007 issue of Cabinet Magazine (A Quarterly Magazine of Art & Culture) says [Emphasis Added]

“… those stirred to action by the Shambhala myth were members of the Nazi party… in particular, those working under Reichshrer Heinrich Himmler in a branch of the SS called the Ahnenerbe, which served as the organization’s "Ancestral Heritage" office. The Ahnenerbe was Himmler’s pet project, established to trace the heritage of the "master race" back to its origins. It was to this end that, in 1938, five SS officers were sent on an expedition to Tibet.

The Ahnenerb’s "scientific" endeavors were colored by Himmler’s library of bizarre beliefs, which ranged from the pseudoscientific (he was an advocate of Hans Hörbiger’s World Ice Theory, which posited that the universe is shaped by the continual battle between fire and ice), to the merely egomaniacal (he was convinced that he was the reincarnation of the tenth-century Saxon king Henry the Fowler, and organized expeditions to prove this). As a result, the Ahnenerbe was staffed by an assortment of cranks, amateurs, and, in the case of Karl Maria Wiligut, often referred to as "Himmler’s Rasputin," the clinically insane. This made for a combustible mix of occult belief and all manner of contemporary pseudoscience. And so it was that the Shambhala myth, filtered through Theosophy, came to meet phrenology and physiognomy on the Tibetan plateau.

The main players in the SS expedition were Ernst Schäfer, a famous explorer and zoologist who served as the expedition’s leader, and Bruno Berger, who served as the team’s anthropologist. Unlike many in the Ahnenerbe, Schafer was a respected scientist, and it remains unclear whether his allegiance to the SS was ideological or, as he later claimed, merely opportunistic. Berger’s alliances were slightly more clear-cut. During his time on the "Roof of the World," he measured the heads of Tibetans with menacing calipers that pinched and prodded, and made physiognomic facial casts out of torturously slow-drying plaster, all in hopes of finding traces of the master race. Berger would later be involved in gathering anatomical specimens from among the prisoners in Auschwitz, in preparation for a never-realized expedition to the Caucasus with Schäfer's then-newly established Sven Hedin Institute for Inner Asian Research”. [18]

In that role he participated in Ernst Schäfer's 1938 journey to Tibet, helped the Race and Settlement Office of the SS identify Jews and helped locate subjects needed for a skeleton collection to help educate on the identification of Jewish peoples.

Beger claimed that he was unaware the Auschwitz prisoners he measured were to be killed. While two others indicted in the trial were released, Beger was convicted on April 6, 1971, and sentenced to three years in prison for being an accomplice in the murder of 86 Jews. Upon appeal however, his sentence was reduced to three years of probation.

Additionally….

The authors of Shadow of the Dalai Lama write that the Dalai Lama met at least three times over the years with his “friend” Miguel Serrano, and five times with Shoko Asahara.

The Dalai Lama and Shoko Asahara:

Dalai-Lama-Shoko-AsaharaThe site of Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the state of Israel, shows a picture of The Dalai Lama and a smiling Shoko Asahara. [19]

Asahara was leader of the Aum Shinrikyo cult, which blended Hindu and Buddhist spirituality with the book of Revelation and the writings of Nostradamus. He claimed to be a reincarnation of the Hindu god Shiva, and promised to lead his followers to salvation when impending Armageddon arrived. Apparently the CIA had once investigated the group for trying to acquire a nuclear capability. He has been convicted of masterminding the 1995 Sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway and several other crimes, and has been sentenced to death. His legal team appealed the sentence, but the appeal has been declined, and he is currently awaiting execution. 11 other members of his cult have also been sentenced to death. [20]

The Dalai Lama and Miguel Serrano:

In 1992, the Dalai Lama visited Chile, where he was greeted at the airport by another Nazi friend, Miguel Serrano. Serrano, while functioning as a diplomat for the Chilean government, also served as the head of the National Socialist Party (Nazi Party) of Chile, and associated with old Nazis who had fed to South America, including Otto Skorzeny, the SS officer who organized the notorious “Ratline,” smuggling Nazi war criminals out of Germany, many into South America. Serrano had numerous meetings with the Dalai Lama. [21]

Miguel Serrano, is a retired Chilean diplomat, explorer and author of poetry, books on spiritual questing, a leader of the National Socialist Party of Chile and chief proponent of “esoteric Hitlerism”. He has claimed to have been in astral contact with Hitler, and asserts that Hitler did not die in Berlin but rather fled to Shambhala. According to Serrano Hitler relocated from the Tibetan Himalayas to the center of the earth, whence he will soon emerge, astride a white steed and flanked by an army of UFOs, to inaugurate the "Fourth Reich". In 1984 he published his 643-page tome, Adolf Hitler, el Último Avatãra (Adolf Hitler: The Last Avatar), which is dedicated "To the glory of the Führer, Adolf Hitler".

In late 1941, Serrano, was introduced to a Chilean esoteric order owing allegiance to a mysterious and far-flung Brahmin elite centered in the Himalayas. This mystico-martial order practiced ritual magic, tantric and kundalini yoga linked to Nietzschean concepts of the will to power and fascist activism. He was initiated into the order in February 1942. Cult members regarded Adolf Hitler as a savior of the Indo-European or Aryan race.

“Miguel Serrano claims to elucidate the otherworldly origin of the Hyperborean (an inhabitant of the extreme north) descended Aryans, image-bearers of the godhead, and postulates a global conspiracy against them by an evil inferior godlet: the Demiurge, worshipped by the Jews, lord of planet Earth, spawner of the primitive hominid stocks, and author of all base materiality…He is especially indebted to the Jungian theory of collective racial archetypes and follows Savitri Devi in recognizing Adolf Hitler as an avatar who battled against the demonic materialistic hosts of the Kali Yuga”. [Wikipedia]

In other words the Aryans were image bearers of the Godhead, and the Jews who conspired against them, worshippers of “an evil inferior godlet” that spawned “primitive hominids”. Adolf Hitler was an avatar who battled against these demons.

In An Interview With Miguel Serrano, “Esoteric Hitlerist” he says [Emphasis Added]

“For me Esoteric Hitlerism is being possessed by the archetypes of the collective unconscious which the Greeks used to call Gods among them Apollo, which really is Wotan for the Germans and Vishnu or Shiva for the Hindus -and its development in the individual and collective souls of the actual Hitlerist warriors. That means a new/old religion, with all of its rituals and myths which are necessary to discover or rediscover. Its central Drama is the apparition on this earth of the Person of Adolf Hitler, the last Avatara who came to produce this enormous storm or catastrophe in order to awake all those who are asleep and to open the New Age which will come after the Deluge. That is the reason why we have started to count the beginning of the New Age after the birth of Hitler. We are in the year 105”.

And [Emphasis Added]

“ I also met the Dalai Lama at the moment he escape from Tibet during the Communist Chinese invasion. He was very young, 25 years old. I went to meet him at the Himalayas. he never forgets that. and when we met again during the funeral of Indira Gandhi in Delhi. he invited me to go to Dharamsala, where he lives now. We had a very interesting talk. It is good to know that before Buddhism was introduced in Tibet. Tibetans were a warrior’s race and their religion. the Bo, used also the same swastika of Hitlerism. Until today Intelligence Services of England and United States have been unable to discover the real mysterious links that existed between Tibet and Hitlerist Germany. [22]

India seemed to Serrano a source of esoteric truth, and he immersed himself in its spiritual heritage. In his book, The Serpent of Paradise, Serrano claims that he had discovered the "inner" aspect of Mount Kailas. He met many leading Indian personalities through his diplomatic position, becoming a personal friend of Nehru, Indira Gandhi and the Dalai Lama.

Issue Two ..Shambhala and the Kalachakra Tantra

What and Where is Shambhala?

Shambhala (also spelled Shambala or Shamballa) is a Sanskrit term meaning place of peace/tranquility/happiness and was part of the inspiration for the tale of Shangri-La in the popular book Lost Horizon, a 1933 novel by James Hilton.. However in Tibetan Buddhist tradition, Shambhala It is said to exist simultaneously in the material, psychic and spiritual dimensions and therefore has three meanings.

Externally, Shambhala was a geographic location, hidden somewhere beyond the snowpeaks of the Himalayas, a seat of inspiration where the Buddha taught the Kalachakra Tantra … the Tantra of the Wheel of Time. However Shambhala is also a spiritual empire, “invisible to ordinary mortal eyes and whose borders can only be crossed by those who have been initiated into the secret teachings of the Kalachakra Tantra” [23]

Note: Also see Shambhala according to The People's Almanac #3. Footnote IV.

The ancient texts of the Zhang Zhung culture and the Bön scriptures speak of a closely related land called Olmolungring. The Zhang Zhung culture was an ancient culture of western and northwestern Tibet, pre-dating the culture of Tibetan Buddhism in Tibet. Zhang Zhung culture is associated with the Bön religion, which in turn, has influenced the philosophies and practices of Tibetan Buddhism. Bön is the oldest spiritual tradition of Tibet. In the mythology of Bon, the native religion of Tibet, Shambhala was a Central Asian kingdom, the origin and center of the world whence issued all spiritual energies and where all the inhabitants are said to be enlightened.

One theory reads that the inhabitants of Shambhala are not centered in one Kingdom, but are scattered …with their settlements existing in the pattern of a vast Mandala, but certainly is no ordinary country as noted by the Dalai Lama during the 1985 Kalachakra initiation in Bodhgaya

"Although those with special affiliation may actually be able to go there through their karmic connection, nevertheless it is not a physical place that we can actually find. We can only say that it is a pure land, a pure land in the human realm. And unless one has the merit and the actual karmic association, one cannot actually arrive there." [24]

About Shambhala, Dr. Alexander Berzin says

“Since Shambhala plays a prominent role in the Kalachakra system, most people are curious to know what Shambhala actually is and where it is located. …Although there may be a place in this world representative of Shambhala, that is not the actual fabled land. Shambhala cannot be found on this planet or even in some distant world. It is, however, a human realm in which everything is conducive for spiritual practice, particularly of Kalachakra.

Meditation masters have written guidebooks, in both Sanskrit and Tibetan, for reaching Shambhala. They describe the journey as a physical one only up to a certain point. The sojourner must subsequently repeat millions of mantras and other special practices in order to arrive at the final goal. The journey to Shambhala, then, is primarily a spiritual one. [51]

Note: A Mandala is seen as a microcosm representing various divine powers at work in the universe. For details about the Mandala. See Footnote II.

The Kalachakra Tantra

Since it is believed that Shambhala’s borders can only be crossed by those who have been initiated into the secret teachings of the Kalachakra Tantra, it is this text that is of most interest. The Kalachakra is one of the most complex systems within tantric Buddhism and, according to some Buddhist masters, the most advanced form of Vajrayana (the Tibetan branch of Buddhist tradition) practice. It is said to be an abridged form of an original text, the Kalachakra Mulatantra which is no longer extant.

However there is a little more to this than some esoteric practices to obtain ‘Buddhahood”.

Chris Wiley’s article Utopia on the Roof of the World, published in the fall 2007 issue of Cabinet Magazine which is a Quarterly Magazine of Art & Culture, says [Emphasis Added]

“The Shambhala myth is derived from a number of esoteric Buddhist texts, primarily the Kalachakra Tantra. Taken together, these texts provide detailed descriptions of the kingdom, trace the arc of its history, and prophesy its future. We are told that the enormous, lotus-shaped, mountain kingdom is ruled by a lineage of wise, august monarchs, who each reign for a hundred years. They serve as the keepers of the sacred Kalachakra teachings, which were passed down by the Buddha to Shambhala’s first king, King Suchandra”. [25]

The Kalachakra Initiations

The Kālachakra consists of an earth ritual, the creation of a sand mandala [See Footnote II], teaching, meditation, ritual dancing, and a several day long initiation ceremony.

The Dalai Lamas have had specific interest in the Kālachakra practice, particularly the First, Second, Seventh, Eighth, and the current (Fourteenth) Dalai Lamas. The present Dalai Lama has given some thirty Kalachakra initiations (which empowers the disciple to practice the Kālachakra tantra in the service of attaining Buddhahood) all over the world, and is the most prominent Kālachakra lineage holder alive today. Billed as the "Kālachakra for World Peace," they draw tens of thousands of people. As The Shadow of The Dalai Lama says…

“Over the last 25 years thousands of people worldwide have been initiated into the highest levels of Buddhism by the 14th Dalai Lama. Fundamental to this initiation is a holy text (tantra), namely the Kālachakra-Tantra, part of which is the Shambhala Myth”. [26]

In 1981 at an interfaith service in his honour by the World Congress of Faiths, the Dalai Lama focused on the commonality of faiths and the need for unity among different religions, saying

"I always believe that it is much better to have a variety of religions, a variety of philosophies, rather than one single religion or philosophy. This is necessary because of the different mental dispositions of each human being. Each religion has certain unique ideas or techniques, and learning about them can only enrich one's own faith." [27]

But does he practice what he preaches?

In the words of the Dalai Lama

“The general aim of tantric initiations is that through the initiations the guru ripens the disciple's psycho-physical continuum. Here "ripening" means empowering the disciple to practise the yoga of the generation process and the completion process. In particular, the Kalachakra initiations empower the disciple to practise the yoga of the Kalachakra tantra, and, ultimately, to achieve the state of Shri Kalachakra”. [29]

Bloomington, Indiana

The Tibetan Cultural Center in Bloomington, Indiana was founded by the Dalai Lama's brother, retired Indiana University professor Thubten Norbu and former Abbot of Kumbum Monastery in Amdo, Tibet. It was the scene of the August ’99, eight-day Buddhist ritual … the fourth Kalachakra initiation to be held in the US.

[During his years in the Indiana University, Thubten Norbu was responsible for founding The Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center in Bloomington. It is devoted to preserving Tibetan culture and religion. For Details See Footnote 6. Norbu also wrote a number of books, including his autobiography, Tibet Is My Country: as told to Heinrich Harrer.]

At the August 16th, welcoming ceremony in Market Square Arena, not only did Governor Frank O'Bannon, Indianapolis Mayor Stephen Goldsmith, and actor Steven Seagal acknowledge the Dalai Lama as "Your Holiness", but four representatives from world faiths publicly displayed their support of the Dalai and his message. Greeting "His Holiness" were Dr. Clark Williamson from the Christian Theological Seminary of Indianapolis; Iman Michael Saahir of the Nur-Allah Islamic Center; Sister Margaret Funk, a Catholic Nun [Our Lady of Grace Monastery in Beech Grove, Indiana] and Executive Director of the Monastic Interfaith Dialogue; and Rabbi Dennis Sasso from the Beth-el Zedeck congregation.

Incidentally, Sister Mary Margaret Funk also organized an August 23rd interfaith peace vigil for a select group of 800 men and women at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Bloomington. The group included Buddhist leaders from Asia, Europe, and North America and representatives from Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, and Islam. [29b]

In an article entitled Occultism in the Heartland: Speaking the Message of Interfaithism, Gary Kah reports..

“Drawing thousands from around the world, the "Kalachakra" was a multi-day Buddhist event. It contained "Earth Rituals" and an "Earth Ritual Dance," prayer presentations, Buddhist lectures and teachings, ritual offering dances, ceremonies, student initiations, and times of meditation for healing and harmony. The Kalachakra is not just one ritual, but a series of initiations, ceremonies, and Buddhist religious functions….

… To aid in the Bloomington, Indiana event, a new three-story shrine was constructed, as well as numerous outbuildings and facilities for housing the many visiting lama's. The Tibetan Cultural Center in Bloomington, which is presided over by the Dalai Lama's brother, shipped in a 1,000 pound three-dimensional "Kalachakra mandala" from India which replicated the palace of Kalachakra.

While the main thrust of the event focused on the teachings of the Dalai and the actual initiation, many sideline attractions were held to compliment the Kalachakra. Tibetan films, musicians, and performers gave visiting followers ample venues to continue their Buddhist experiences. One of the "benefit" shows was the Mystical Arts of Tibet which featured monks performing the Dur-dak Gar-cham, also known as the Dance of the Skeleton Lords, a presentation to remind oneself of the fleeting nature of the world.

The Kalachakra was a time to add to the "universal" life energy of "peace" and world love. It was a "sacred" assembly, an event to help usher in the new millennium… Through all the ceremony and pomp, the teachings and lectures, the rituals and regalia, a "transcending" spiritual theme was interwoven. All religions and faiths are pathways, blending together in search for "God" and universal "truth"...” [29c]

The Kalachakra Prophecies

The Shambhala or Kalachakra prophecy, believed to be the source of legends of a future messiah in all religions, very specifically prophesizes that when the world declines into war and greed, and all is lost, the 25th Kalki king will emerge from Shambhala with a huge army to vanquish "Dark Forces" and usher in a worldwide thousand-year Golden Age.

One passage of the Kalachakra (Shri Kalachakra I. 161) reads,

"The Chakravartin shall come out at the end of the age, from the city the gods fashioned on Mount Kailasa. He shall smite the barbarians in battle with his own four-division army, on the entire surface of the earth."

There seems to be a quite a conflict here.

The Dalai Lama initiates thousands into the highest levels of Buddhism, fundamental to which is the Kalachakra-Tantra, which very specifically prophesizes that 25th Kalki king will emerge from Shambhala with a huge army to vanquish "Dark Forces" and usher in a worldwide thousand-year Golden Age.

Definitely a warrior king.

And yet Time Magazine’s series of photographs by photographer James Nachtwey portraying The Dalai Lama at Home at his private residence in exile in Dharamsala, India has one photograph (the fourth picture in the series) that shows the Dalai Lama reading from what appears to be a large old manuscript. The title, true to the magazine’s usual myopic views when it come to spiritual matters, reads… [Emphasis Added]

Though he is a spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama also holds a doctorate in philosophy. He rejects anything that has been disproved by scientific inquiry and dismisses Buddhist teachings not verified by science. [29d]

And why do so many people flock to receive the Kalachakra Initiations? I found an interesting answer on a site called The Berzin Archives, which is a collection of works of the American scholar and author Alexander Berzin, who spent 29 years in India, studying and practicing Tibetan Buddhism, occasionally serving as translator for the Dalai Lama. In fact the Dalai Lama called The Berzin Archives …

“a valuable educational tool for making globally available online a vast array of articles spanning the various schools and aspects of Buddhism and Tibetan culture

The following excerpts are from the book Taking the Kalachakra Initiation by Dr. Berzin

“Kalachakra and World Peace: We always hear that the Kalachakra empowerment is for world peace. Some people even choose Kalachakra over other anuttarayoga tantra systems because of this association. But what exactly is the connection between Kalachakra and peace, and why do so many people attend? Although empowerments for other tantras are intended for only a small number of disciples at a time, there is a historical tradition of conferring the Kalachakra initiation to large crowds of people. Buddha first gave it to the king of Shambhala and his entourage of ninety-six minor rulers. In time, their descendants conferred it upon the entire population of Shambhala in order to unite them against the threat of a possible invasion and avert annihilation. This is the origin of the association of the Kalachakra empowerment with world peace and the tradition of conferring it upon large numbers of participants.

According to the Kalachakra presentation of historical cycles, barbaric hordes periodically invade the civilized world and try to eliminate all possibilities for spiritual practice. A future invasion is predicted for the year 2424 of this common era, when it is said there will be another brutal world war. At that time help will come from Shambhala to defeat the barbarians. A new golden age will dawn, with everything conducive for spiritual practice, particularly of Kalachakra. All those who have previously received the Kalachakra initiation will be reborn at that time on the victorious side. The highest motivation for receiving the empowerment is to be able to practice the Kalachakra methods now in order to achieve enlightenment in this very lifetime. Nevertheless, people have traditionally flocked to the initiation with the motivation of planting karmic seeds to connect themselves with this future golden age so as to complete its practice then.” [49]

Now I may be just a simple ‘unenlightened’ Christian, but I fail to see why the Kalachakra empowerment is for world peace. I was always under the impression that world peace means no war. However the Kalachakra empowerment means no such thing. On the contrary it predicts yet another bloody war in which the ‘barbarians’ will be defeated. The only (future) benefit in the empowerment seems to be that it is supposed to ensure that the initiate will be reborn on the victorious side.

Questions For The Dalai Lama

In Eight Questions to the 14th Dalai Lama on the topic of the Kalachakra-Tantra by the authors of Shadow of the Dalai Lama, [See Footnote III] they ask, in view of the fact that “The historical Buddha was against war in every form and that for him there was no such thing as a righteous or holy war… (As in the original.. the basic question is asked in bold and then expanded upon)

“Why does the Kalachakra-Tantra which supposedly is a “ritual for world peaceprophesy and glorify a “holy war” (Shambhala war) by Buddhists against non-Buddhists?

Dalai Lama, you are honoured throughout the world as a messenger for peace, who has spoken out publicly many times against every use of violence and, in fact, you have presented the Kalachakra-Tantra as a contributor to world peace. The Kalachakra-Tantra is, however, anything but pacifist in its content, rather it prophecies and promotes on an ideological basis a bloody religious war for world leadership between Buddhists and non-Buddhists (Shambhala Myth). The original text describes the Buddhist war-methods as “merciless” and “cruel”. It says: “The supremely ferocious warriors will throw down the barbarian hordes” and “eliminate” (them). (Shri Kalachakra I. 163/165) The Kalachakra Tantra describes over many paragraphs murderous super weapons which the Buddhist army will use against “the enemy of the Dharma”. (Shri Kalachakra I. 128-142)”

[See Footnote I on Dharma].

The second question is especially interesting

“Why does the Kalachakra-Tantra, which is supposedly a contributor to a world ecumenical movement and a world ethos, attack the 3 monotheist-semitic religions, especially Islam, named as the enemy of Dharma, and swear a religious war against Islam?

Dalai Lama, one of your basic demands is tolerance of other religions and this has made you to the most famous symbol of the inter-religious dialogue. This is in conflict, however, with many passages in the Kalachakra-Tantral – even though you have publicly promoted this ritual as a contributor to ecumenical thinking. Some of the main figures in the semitic-monotheist religions such as “Adam, Enoch, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, Mani, Mohammed and the Mahdi” are characterised as the “family of the demonic snakes” and are attributed with characteristics of darkness and deceit. (Shri Kalachakra I. 154)” [Emphasis Added]

As is one other

Why does the Kalachakra-Tantra promote the institution of a “Chakravartin” (a world emperor) who should set up a global BuddhistTheocracy”, a buddhocracy - this in direct conflict to your continual protestations of a belief in democracy?

The Kalachakra-Tantra includes the buddhocratic teaching of a Chakravartin or world emperor. “The Chakravartin shall come out at the end of the age, from the city the gods fashioned on Mount Kailasa. He shall smite the barbarians in battle with his own four-division army, on the entire surface of the earth.” This statement can be found in the original text of the Kalachakra-Tantra (Shri Kalachakra I. 161). A Chakravartin is, according to the Indian tradition, a messianic priest-king who brings absolution, a “theocrat” (better “buddhocrat”) who unites religious, political, legal and military power in himself. Sharing of power by the common man and democracy are completely unknown concepts in this political theology which stems from the 10th century.

There were also other questions asked.. about the sexual abuse of women and the forbidding of the public discussion of the secret rites of the Kalachakra-Tantra on pain of “the punishments of hell

For further details see the authors site. [27]

Inhabitants of Shambhala

The Maitreya

Additionally the Dalai Lama also believes in the Maitreya who will emerge as a world leader and teacher. The Maitreya was introduced to Americans decades ago by New Age leader Benjamin Crème. Crème is supposedly overshadowed by Maitreya for about 20 to 40 minutes at the beginning and end of every lecture he gives (except in one notable case where a single Christian woman, Michigan attorney Constance Cumbey, praying the Lord’s prayer was able to halt the manifestations.. One has to love the story). But I digress.. Maitreya

“…has been a central feature of Buddhist life throughout Asian history and in Asian lands as far-ranging as Burma, China, and Japan, to name but a few. The tradition of holding a Maitreya festival began in India and soon spread with Buddhist culture into surrounding lands, including Tibet and Mongolia, the two cultures in whose traditions the TBLC is rooted”. [30] [Emphasis Added

The Tibetan Buddhist Learning Center talks about The Maitreya Festival (held on August 17th 2008 ) which is “a way of honoring and making a connection with the Protector Maitreya, the Future Buddha”.

“…the assembled monks offer prayers inviting the future Buddha, known as the Protector Maitreya, to descend from Tushita heaven to be present for the gathering…. This gathering begins with a pre-recorded message (in Tibetan) from His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who offers his reflections on the festivals relevance”. [31] Emphasis Added

As the Dalai Lama says [Emphasis Added]

"Relying on certain Mahayana Buddhist citations and quotations, we believe that in this fortunate aeon one thousand Buddhas will appear. This is the time of the fourth Buddha, Buddha Shakyamuni, whose teaching is still existing , and the fifth Buddha will be Maitreya Buddha." [32]

Note: While Benjamin Crème runs around the world portraying the Maitreya as a great and wise teacher, some legends equate the Maitreya with Kalki, the doomsday avatar of Vishnu. Certainly many, including the Tibetans, believe that this Maitreya is not as friendly as Crème makes him out to be. [More on Maitreya] Since it is impossible for me to verify the following quote.. I present it as is..

On a five-year expedition to the East, Russian Orientalist and painter Nicholas Roerich recorded the following predictions of Tibetan Lamas.

"First will begin an unprecedented war of all nations. Afterward, brother shall rise against brother. Oceans of blood shall flow. They shall forget the meaning of the word Teacher. But then shall the Teachers appear and in all corners of the world shall be heard the true teaching. To this word of truth shall the people be drawn, but those who are filled with darkness and ignorance shall set obstacles. As a diamond, glows the light on the tower of the Lord of Shambhala. One stone in his ring is worth more than all the world's treasures. Even those who by accident help the Teachings of Shambhala will receive in return a hundredfold. Already many warriors of the teaching or truth are reincarnated. Only a few years shall elapse before everyone shall hear the mighty steps of the Lord of the New Era. And one can already perceive unusual manifestations and encounter unusual people. Already they open the gates of knowledge and ripened fruits are falling from the trees. The banner of Shambhala shall encircle the central lands of the Blessed One. Those who accept him shall rejoice. And those who deny him shall tremble. The denier shall be given over to justice and shall be forgotten. And the warriors shall march under the banner of Maitreya." [33]

Alice Bailey and her followers at the Lucis Trust have repeatedly praised revolutions and dictatorships, approving them as part of the workings of "the Plan." In September 1939, she said, "The men who inspired the initiating French revolution; the great conqueror, Napoleon; Bismarck, creator of a nation; Mussolini, the regenerator of his people; Hitler who lifted a distressed people upon his shoulders; Lenin, the idealist, Stalin and Franco" were "all expressions of the Shamballa force" - a force which Bailey extolled. [34]

In an address at the Arcane School Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, Bailey suggested that the "Shamballa force", the force from the invisible dimensions led by the Lord Maitreya will be "destructive." It will also, she said, eject unbelievers from the earth:

"The decision to release the Shamballa force during this century into direct contact with the human kingdom is one of the final and most compelling acts of preparation for the New Age. The Shamballa force is destructive and ejective ... inspiring new understanding of The Plan.. It is this force ... which will bring about that tremendous crisis, the initiation of the race into the mysteries of the ages. [35] [More On Alice Bailey and The Lucis Trust]

Another spawn of hell, said to live in Shambhala, is

Sanat Kumara

... which means "eternal youth" in Sanskrit, but is hard to mistake other than an anagram for Satan, appears as a rishi in the Hindu religious text the Chandogya Upanishad, is also a deity in Jainism and is generally regarded as the great guru, saviour of Earth.

The most common title attributed to Sanat Kumara in the Theosophical religious tradition is "Lord of the World" According to some of the teachings derived from modern Theosophy, Sanat Kumara is the Lord or Regent of Earth and of humanity. It is believed by some that he is the founder of the Great White Brotherhood, which is composed of Ascended Masters and volunteers from other worlds who have joined together to advance spiritual evolution on Earth.

Helena Blavatsky claimed he belonged to a group of beings, the Lords of Flame, whom Christian tradition have misunderstood as Lucifer and the fallen angels. [36]

While

Church Universal and Triumphant believes he is the Ancient of Days spoken of in Daniel 7:9, 13 (Are they ever in for a shock) and that he and 144,000 souls of Light volunteered to keep the flame of Life on behalf of Earth's people, until the children of God turned once again to serve the Mighty I AM Presence. The first to respond to his flame was Gautama Buddha, followed by Lord Maitreya and Jesus.

Either way.. he is said to live in a city on the etheric plane called Shambhala. Incidentally the King of Shambhala is often metaphorically referred to as The King of the World.

And What Does the Bible say about the God Of This World?

And, hopefully, every Christian knows the Bible, in 2 Corinthians 4:4, refers to Satan as the “God of this world” who has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel. John 12:31 refers to him as “the ruler of this world”, while Ephesians 2:2 speaks of “the prince of the power of the air”. 2 Timothy 2:26 says people have been “held captive by him to do his will”. And 1 John 5:19 tells us that “the whole world lies in the power of the evil one

You can say that again…

All of which brings us to a third issue which certainly bears mention, since it cements the nature of the demonic roots of the Dalai Lama’s religion.

The Dalai Lama and Nechung - The State Oracle of Tibet

From the website of the Government of Tibet in Exile [All Emphasis Added]

“Like many ancient civilizations of the world, the phenomenon of oracles remains an important part of the Tibetan way of life. Tibetans rely on oracles for various reasons. The purpose of the oracles is not just to foretell the future. They are called upon as protectors and sometimes used as healers. However, their primary function is to protect the Buddha Dharma and its practitioners. [See Footnote I on Dharma].

In the Tibetan tradition, the word oracle is used for a spirit which enters those men and women who act as mediums between the natural and the spiritual realms. The mediums are, therefore, known as kuten, which literally means, "the physical basis."”

Nechung monastery was responsible for keeping intact a daily link with Tibet's main spirit Protector, Pehar Gyalpo

In a section on Oracles on Buddhist Prophecy we learn that

"The historical home of the State Oracle of Tibet was Nechung Monastery. Before the Tibetan diaspora in 1959, Nechung was located four miles west of Lhasa and had since the time of the Thirteenth Dalai Lama supported 115 monks. Nechung, however, was one of the approximately 6000 monasteries destroyed when the Chinese invaded Tibet in 1949.

“Six monks from Nechung Monastery survived its razing in the Chinese Cultural Revolution and preserved the monastery’s complex rituals and tradition. Nechung was rebuilt in Dharamsala, India and currently is home to about seventy monks including the present Medium of the State Oracle, Venerable Thupten Ngodup”.

Nechung’s Oracle, or Kuten as he is called in Tibetan, has traditionally been one of the main advisors to the Dalai Lama and is also consulted during the search for his reincarnation. Upon the death of the Dalai Lama, the State Oracle is immediately consulted about where the Dalai Lama is going to reincarnate. He gives the search party their first indication of where to begin looking. Harrer says,

"Some time before his death, in 1933, the thirteenth Dalai Lama had given intimations regarding the manner of his rebirth. After his death, the body sat in state at the Potala in traditional Buddha posture, looking toward the south. One morning, it was noticed that his head was turned toward the east. The State Oracle was straightaway consulted, and while in his trance the monk threw a white scarf in the direction of the rising sun." (Harrer, 1953 p298) [37]

According to tibet.com, the official website of the government of Tibet in exile, the Dalai Lama writes in his autobiography, Freedom in Exile,

"For hundreds of years now, it has been traditional for the Dalai Lama, and the Government, to consult Nechung during the New Year festivals. In addition, he might well be called upon at other times if either have specific queries. I myself have dealings with him several times a year This may sound far-fetched to twentieth-century western readers. Even some Tibetans, mostly those who consider themselves 'progressive', have misgivings about my continued use of this ancient method of intelligence gathering. But I do so for the simple reason that as I look back over the many occasions when I have asked questions of the oracle, on each one of them time has proved that his answer was correct. This is not to say that I rely solely on the oracle's advice. I do not. I seek his opinion in the same way as I seek the opinion of my Cabinet and just as 1 seek the opinion of my own conscience. I consider the gods to be my 'upper house'. The Kashag constitutes my lower house”.

He describes the garb worn by the Nechung on formal occasions, which “weighs more than seventy pounds and the medium, when not in trance, can hardly walk in it”. He then goes on to describe the ceremony which “begins with chanted invocations and prayers, accompanied by the urgings of horns, cymbals and drums”. Then… [All Emphasis Added]

“… as the first prayer cycle concludes and the second begins, his trance begins to deepen. … "Now the kuten's face transforms, becoming rather wild before puffing up to give him an altogether strange appearance, with bulging eyes and swollen cheeks. His breathing begins to shorten and he starts to hiss violently. Then, momentarily, his respiration stops. At this point the helmet is tied in place with a knot so tight that it would undoubtedly strangle the Kuten if something very real were not happening. The possession is now complete and the mortal frame of the medium expands visibly.

"Next, he leaps up with a start and, grabbing a ritual sword from one of his attendants, begins to dance with slow, dignified, yet somehow menacing, steps. He then comes in front of me and either prostrates fully or bows deeply from the waist until his helmet touches the ground before springing back up, the weight of his regalia counting for nothing. The volcanic energy of the deity can barely be contained within the earthly frailty of the kuten, who moves and gestures as if his body were made of rubber and driven by a coiled spring of enormous power”. [38]

Demon Possession anyone??

Conclusion

Since one would certainly hope that any one who has carefully read this article would come to realize that the Dalai Lama is not exactly what he says he is and certainly not what he is popularly made out to be, therefore this is less a conclusion, than a summary.

The Dalai Lama has met with countless heads of state and religious leaders in numerous countries. He has great influence and commands a great deal of respect and has been given numerous awards including one from a holocaust survivor foundation.. Yet he counts among his friends and acquaintances at least two Nazis, one murderous Japanese cult leader already sentenced to death and a dangerous Chilean lunatic who claims to have been in astral contact with Hitler.

He regularly consults the Nechung Oracle, in ceremonies during which the oracle goes into a trance and his face transforms and becomes “rather wild”, puffs up with “with bulging eyes and swollen cheeks” and he starts to hiss violently.

On the one hand, travelling the world, the Dalai Lama preaches a message of peace, compassion and interfaith co-operation. On the other hand he also has initiated thousands of people into the Kalachakra initiation, part of which is the Shambhala myth which prophecies and promotes, on an ideological basis, a “holy war” (Shambhala war) by Buddhists against non-Buddhists, in which “supremely ferocious warriors will throw down the barbarian hordes” and “eliminate” them.

The Kalachakra texts say that the 25th Kalki king will emerge from Shambhala with a huge army to vanquish "Dark Forces" and usher in a worldwide thousand-year Golden Age. And who are these ‘Dark Forces’? Shri Kalachakra I. 154 says “Adam, Enoch, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, Mani, Mohammed and the Mahdi” are characterised as the “family of the demonic snakes

The Dalai Lama believes in and teaches on the coming of the Maitreya..

The concept of a coming World Teacher (Maitreya) who sets up a Golden Age on earth can be found in many world religious systems as well as in the literature of the occult. Some talk of The Ascended Masters, while others look For The Coming of the Maitreya, who is believed to be the 1st and 2nd initiations who "prepares the way" for this "Lord of the World" - "Sanat Kumara", the third initiation. Some Muslims look to the coming of Imam Mahdi or The 12th Imam, whom Shiites believe will reappear when the world has become full of oppression and tyranny. Even some South American cultures look to the return of the serpent god Quetzalcoatl.

And who is this world leader and teacher?. Although he is called by different names there is little doubt that all traditions refer to the same being.. The one the Bible warned us about thousands of years ago.. The "Man of Sin," "the Son of Perdition," he that opposeth and exalteth himself," "the Wicked One whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of His mouth". In other words..

The antichrist!

As respected as he is, not many people will believe that the Dalai Lama has anything to do with evil, yet we greatly fear that the Dalai Lama is one of those sent to smooth the way for “he whose coming is after the working of Satan". And what a great job he is doing..

And, as usual, the vast majority of the church is asleep. The archbishops of the Anglican church meet often with the Dalai Lama and our emerging apostates... Doug Pagitt and Rob Bell attended his 2008 Seeds of Compassion interfaith meeting and even addressing the Dalai Lama as “his holiness.” Details

Dharma: literally translates as that which upholds or supports (from the root, dhr- to hold, ma - mother or Earth or Universe or Nature depending on context), and is generally translated into English as law. But throughout the history of Indian philosophy, it has governed ideas about the proper conduct of living – ideas that are upheld by the laws of the universe. In other words.. an Indian spiritual and religious term, that means one's righteous duty, or any virtuous path in the common sense of the term. In Indian languages it contextually implies one's religion. Throughout Indian philosophy, Dharma is present as a central concept that is used in order to explain the "higher truth" or ultimate reality of the universe.

Footnote II
Mandalas
Perhaps the most admired and discussed symbol of Buddhist religion and art is the mandala, a word which, like guru and yoga, has become part of the English language. Its popularity is underscored by the use of the word mandala as a synonym for sacred space in scholarship world over, and by its presence in English-language dictionaries and encyclopedias. [39]

What are Mandalas? [All Emphasis Added]

Certainly not just intricate works of art. According to the Dalai Lama [Emphasis Added]

“The Kalachakra system was one of the last and most complex tantric systems to be brought to Tibet from India. In recent years many Westerners have become acquainted with this tradition as various lamas have given the Kalachakra Initiation to large groups of people. I myself have given it several times in Western countries, as well as in India and Tibet. Such initiation are given on the basis of a mandala, the sacred residence with its residence deities, usually depicted in graphic form . The tradition I follow employs a mandala constructed of colored sand which is carefully assembled prior to each initiation and dismantled once more at the end”.

“Due to their colorful and intricate nature, mandalas have attracted a great deal of interest. Although some can be openly explained, most are related to tantric doctrines that are normally supposed to be kept secret. Consequently, many speculative and mistaken interpretations have circulated among people who viewed them simply as works of art or had no access to reliable explanations. Because the severe misunderstandings that can arise are more harmful than a partial lifting of secrecy, I have encouraged a greater openess in the display and accurate description of mandalas”. [40]

The following quotes are from a variety of sources [All Emphasis Added]

Mandalas were conceived for the progressive realisation of enlightenment or the state of Buddhahood. The Buddha is in the centre of the mandala and around him are deities representing different aspects of Him. These deities symbolise different stages in the process of the realisation of the truth. [41]

In Vajrayana Buddhism a mandala usually depicts a landscape of the Buddha land or the enlightened vision of a Buddha and is “a concentric diagram having spiritual and ritual significance of Buddhism. Mandala is seen as a microcosm representing various divine powers at work in the universe, and it serves as a collection point of god and universal forces”. [42]

“In Tibetan Buddhism, a mandala is an imaginary palace that is contemplated during meditation. Each object in the palace has significance, representing some aspect of wisdom or reminding the meditator of some guiding principle. Tradition dictates the shapes, sizes and colors of these objects. There are many different mandalas, each with different lessons to teach. Most mandalas contain a host of deities as well as inanimate objects” [43]

Construction

Mandalas are “explicitly based on the Scriptural texts… There is good reason for the extreme degree of care and attention that the monks put into their work: they are actually imparting the Buddha's teachings. Since the mandala contains instructions by the Buddha for attaining enlightenment, the purity of their motivation and the perfection of their work allows viewers the maximum benefit” [44] They..

“… are used in the rituals of tantric initiation. They are constructed at the beginning of the initiation, out of grains of colored sand carefully placed on a specially prepared platform. Thus mandalas, like Vedic altars, are temporary structures built of impermanent materials. But while the mud-bricks of altars are simply abandoned after the ritual sacrifice, mandalas are deliberately destroyed, their sand swept up upon completion of the initiation and and poured into a nearby stream or river”.

“All monks at Tibetan Buddhist monasteries are required to learn how to construct mandalas as part of their training. The learning process is two-fold, including the memorization of texts that specify the names, lengths, and positions of the primary lines that define the basic structure of mandalas, as well as the manual techniques of drawing and pouring sand. These texts, however, do not describe every line, nor every detail of each mandala, but rather serve as mnemonic guides to the complete forms of mandalas that must be learned from the repeated practice of construction under the guidance of experienced monks”. [45]

The following quotes about the construction of a Mandala is from a site called artnetwork.com. [All Emphasis Added]

“Opening Ceremony The monks begin the Mandala sand painting with a ceremony of chants, music and mantra recitation for blessing the site to make it conducive for creating the mandala. Throughout its creation, the monks pour millions of grains of sand from traditional metal funnels called chakpur. The finished Mandala is approximately five feet by five feet in size, and takes three to five days.

Dismantling the Mandala During the closing ceremony, the monks dismantle the Mandala, sweeping up the colored sands to symbolize the impermanence of all that exists. The mixed sand is distributed to the audience as blessings for personal health and healing”. [46]

Victor and Victoria Trimondi are pen names used by Mariana and Herbert Röttgen. Their book [Shadow of the Dalai Lama] was published to wide acclaim in Germany in 1999 by the respected Patmos Group. The Shadow of the Dalai Lama hasn’t been published in English, but a translation can be found at the author’s website, trimondi.de. This scholarly work is highly critical of the Dalai Lama and the religious system he presides over. The authors were themselves once followers of the Dalai Lama. Herbert Röttgen was a personal friend of the Dalai Lama, he published a number of the Dalai Lama’s books, and he organized several symposia and major events for him. [47]

Footnote IV
Shambhala according to The People's Almanac #3 by David Wallechinsky and Irving Wallace

Is there really a hidden galaxy of minds living in seclusion in an inaccessible part of Asia, or is it merely a myth? Shambhala, the "Hidden Kingdom," is thought of in Tibet as a community where perfect and semi-perfect beings live and are guiding the evolution of humankind. Shambhala is considered to be the source of the Kalachakra, which is the highest and most esoteric branch of Tibetan mysticism. The Buddha preached the teachings of the Kalachakra to an assembly of holy men in southern India. Afterwards, the teachings remained hidden for 1,000 years until an Indian yogi-scholar went in search of Shambhala and was initiated into the teachings by a holy man he met along the way. The Kalachakra then remained in India until it made its way to Tibet in 1026. Since then the concept of Shambhala has been widely known in Tibet, and Tibetans have been studying the Kalachakra for the least 900 years, learning its science, practicing its meditation, and using its system of astrology to guide their lives. As one Tibetan lama put it, how could Shambhala be the source of something which has affected so many areas of Tibetan life for so long and yet not exist?

Note: Prophetic elements in the Kalachakra literature detail the names and length of reigns of the Shambhala kings, with special focus on the 25th Rigden King, Rudrachakrin

Tibetan religious texts describe the physical makeup of the hidden land in detail. It is thought to look like and eight-petaled lotus blossom because it is made up of eight regions, each surrounded by a ring of mountains. In the center of the innermost ring lies Kalapa, the capital, and the king’s palace, which is composed of gold, diamonds, coral, and precious gems. The capital is surrounded by mountains made of ice, which shine with a crystalline light. The technology of Shambhala is supposed to be highly advanced; the palace contains special skylights made of lenses which serve as high-powered telescopes to study extraterrestrial life, and for hundreds of years Shambhala’s inhabitants have been using aircraft and cars that shuttle through a network of underground tunnels. On the way to enlightenment, Shambhalans acquire such powers a clairvoyance, the ability to move at great speeds, and the ability to materialize and disappear at will.

The prophecy of Shambhala states that each of its kings will rule for 100 years. There will be 32 in all, and as their reigns pass, conditions in the outside world will deteriorate. Men will become more warlike and pursue power for its own sake, and an ideology of materialism will spread over the earth. When the "barbarians" who follow this ideology are united under an evil king and think there is nothing left to conquer, the mists will lift to reveal the icy mountains of Shambhala. The barbarians will attack Shambhala with a huge army equipped with terrible weapons. Then the 32nd king of Shambhala, Rudra Cakrin, will lead a mighty host against the invaders. In a last great battle, the evil king and his followers will be destroyed.

By definition Shambhala is hidden. It is thought to exist somewhere between the Gobi Desert and the Himalayas, but it is protected by a psychic barrier so that no one can find the kingdom who is not meant to. Tibetan lamas spend a great deal of their lives in spiritual development before attempting the journey to Shambhala. Those who try to get there who are not wanted are swallowed by crevasses or caught in avalanches. People and animals tremble at its borders as if bombarded by invisible rays. There are guidebooks to Shambhala, but they describe the route in terms so vague that only those already initiated into the teachings of the Kalachakra can understand them.

Strange sightings in the area where Shambhala is thought to be seem to provide evidence of its existence. Tibetans believe that the land is guarded by beings with superhuman powers. In the early 1900s an article in an Indian newspaper, the Statesman, told of a British major who, camping in the Himalayas, saw a very tall, lightly clad man with long hair. Apparently, noticing that he was being watched, the man leaped down the vertical slope and disappeared. To the major’s astonishment, the Tibetans with whom he was camping showed no surprise at his story; they calmly explained that he had seen one of the snowmen who guard the sacred land.

A more detailed account of these "snowmen" guardians was given by Alexandra David-Neel, an explorer who spent 14 years in Tibet. While traveling through the Himalayas she saw a man moving with extraordinary speed and described him as follows:

"I could clearly see his perfectly calm impassive face and wide-open eyes with their gaze fixed on some invisible distant object situated somewhere high up in space. The man did not run. He seemed to life himself from the ground, proceeding by leaps. It looked as if he had been endowed with the elasticity of a ball, and rebounded each time his feet touched the ground. His steps had the regularity of a pendulum."

While people (especially Tibetan lamas) have been searching for Shambhala for centuries, those who seek the kingdom often never return, either because they have found the hidden country and have remained there or because they have been destroyed in the attempt. Tibetan texts containing what appear to be historical facts about Shambhala, such as the names and dates of its kings and records of corresponding events occurring in the outside world, give Tibetans additional reason for believing that the kingdom exists. Recent events that seem to correspond to the predictions of the mythic kingdom add strength to their belief. The disintegration of Buddhism in Tibet and the growth of materialism throughout the world, coupled with the wars and turmoil of the 20th century, all fit in with the prophecy of Shambhala. [48]

Footnote V: About the Kalachakra Initiation
On a site called The Berzin Archives, which is a collection of works of the American scholar and author Alexander Berzin, who spent 29 years in India, studying and practicing Tibetan Buddhism, occasionally serving as translator. For the Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama called The Berzin Archives …

“a valuable educational tool for making globally available online a vast array of articles spanning the various schools and aspects of Buddhism and Tibetan culture

The following excerpts are from the book Taking the Kalachakra Initiation by Dr. Berzin

An Overview of the Initiation [All Emphasis Added]

“The initiation process spans several days, with the first day being a preparation ceremony, followed by usually two or three days of actual empowerment. The most important part of the initial procedures is taking refuge and the bodhisattva and tantric vows. Without all three, we cannot actually receive empowerment, although we may witness it and derive great benefit. The empowerment itself involves a complex procedure of imagining ourselves transforming into a series of special forms, entering the mandala of the Buddha-figure Kalachakra, and experiencing in it a sequence of purifications and the awakening and enhancing of potentials for future success in the practice. The mandala is an enormous multistoried palace, in and around which are 722 figures, including a principal couple in the center. The master conferring the empowerment simultaneously appears as all these figures, not just as the central one. Thus, throughout the process we visualize ourselves, our teacher and our surroundings in a very special way.

The steps of the initiation are extremely intricate and, without familiarity, the visualizations involved can be quite perplexing. But if, as a proper vessel, we take the vows with full sincerity and at least feel, with strong faith, that all the visualizations are actually occurring, we can be confident that we are receiving the empowerment. With this basis secured, the next step is seeking further instruction and then trying, as sincerely as possible, to travel the full path to enlightenment as presented in the Kalachakra Tantra”. [49]

About the “deities” involved.. [All Emphasis Added]

“Deity-Yoga Sometimes people are puzzled by the tantric practice of relying on deities, which some languages translate as "gods." These deities, however, are not omnipotent creators or beings in limited states of rebirth filled with heavenly delights. Rather, they are extraordinary forms, both male and female, in which Buddhas manifest in order to help people with varying inclinations to overcome their shortcomings and realize their potentials. Each of these Buddha-figures represents both the fully enlightened state and one of its specific features, such as compassion or wisdom”.

Footnote V: The Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center in Bloomington, Indiana.. Occultism in The Heartland

In 1965, at the invitation of Herman B Wells, Chancellor of Indiana University, the Dalai Lama’s brother Norbu, who had fled Tibet in 1950, came to Bloomington and taught Tibetan cultural and language courses at IU until his retirement in 1987. [52]

During his years in the Indiana University, The Dalai Lama’s brother, Norbu, was responsible for founding the Tibetan Cultural Center in Bloomington, Indiana. Devoted to preserving Tibetan culture and religion, the center was later renamed "The Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center by the Dalai Lama. On this 108-acre site in the American heartland, Norbu built the Jangchub Chorten, the Cultural Center Building, four Retreat Cottages, the Kalachakra Stupa, and the Kumbum Chamtse Ling Temple. It also includes 4 rental retreat cottages that resemble traditional Mongolian yurts used by nomads in the far eastern regions of the world.

DL-Kumbum-Chamtse-LingThe Kumbum Chamtse Ling Monastery--located on the grounds of the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center--is dedicated to the promotion of world peace and harmony. It fosters interfaith dialogue and is open to persons of all faiths who wish to come to the temple to meditate, participate in retreat programs, and attend Buddhist Dharma teachings. The 2003 consecration of the monastery involved members of 11 faiths: Catholic, Episcopalian, Methodist, Society of Friends, Bahai, Jewish, Hindu, Shinto, Sikh, Unitarian, and Native American and was co-hosted by a Muslim… Muhammed Ali. [53] DL-Kalachakra-Stupa

The Jangchub Chorten, consecrated by the Dalai Lama in 1987 is a 35-foot-high monument to Tibetans killed in political and religious repression. It contains hair clippings from 13 of the 14 Dalai Lamas of Tibet (hair from the first is missing), hundreds of Buddhist scriptures and other writings, and thousands of small figurines.

The Kalachakra Stupa [right] has inside it’s domed ceiling a reproduction of a Kalachakra mandala.

[A Stupa is "Spiritual Monument" ... one of the oldest icons of Buddhist art, said to be the forerunner of the pagoda and designed with deep symbolism. These monuments enshrine Buddhist relics, and other “holyobjects, and supposedly emanate blessings and peace. According to Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, they are believes to have the “ability to liberate one simply upon seeing their structure".
