Jōdo ; The Pure Land School of China founded in the fourth century on the smaller and larger Sukhāvatī-vyūha Sutras and the Amitāyur-dhyāna Sutra. When transferred to Japan, Hōnen Shōnin and Shinran Shōnin (q.v.) turned this balanced doctrine of faith and works into an extremist practice of salvation by faith alone.
