four conditions (catuḥ-pratyaya, 四緣). A mental event requires
- (1) a causal condition 因緣,
- (2) uninterrupted continuity in the mind stream 等無間緣
- (3) an object of the mind 所緣緣, and
- (4) contributing conditions 增上緣.
A physical event requires only the first and fourth conditions. For example, for a seed to grow, the seed is the causal condition, while soil, sunlight, and water are the contributing conditions.
