four conditions (catuḥ-pratyaya, 四緣). A mental event requires

(1) a causal condition 因緣,
(2) uninterrupted continuity in the mind stream 等無間緣
(3) an object of the mind 所緣緣, and
(4) contributing conditions 增上緣.

A physical event requires only the first and fourth conditions. For example, for a seed to grow, the seed is the causal condition, while soil, sunlight, and water are the contributing conditions.
