eight tones (八音). The Tathāgata’s Brahma tone has eight qualities:
(1) fine,
(2) gentle,
(3) harmonious,
(4) awe-inspiring,
(5) manly,
(6) error-free,
(7) far-reaching, and
(8) carrying inexhaustible meaning.
