     The capital of Anga, one of the sixteen great states in India of Shakyamuni's time, bordered on the west by the Magadha kingdom. Champawas one of the six great cities in India, the others being Shravasti, Shaketa, Vaishali, Varanasi, and Rajagriha. It is believed to have been at the site of present-day Bhagalpur in northeastern India or its vicinity, just south of the Ganges River. Shakyamuni Buddha visited Champaseveral times to preach.
