(u-rgyan or o-rgyan), Tib. (Skt., Oddiyana); a mythical realm that in Tibetan Buddhism is considered the birthplace of - Padmasambhava and the dwelling place of the - dakinls. Geographically, it is placed in an area between Afghanistan and Kashmir, approximately in the Swat valley of present-day Pakistan. The oldest Buddhist Tantras, however, speak of Urgyen as a holy site located in Bengal in northeast India. In both of these traditions Urgyen is considered the place of origin of certain Tantric teachings. One of the eighty-four - mahasiddhas, Indrabhuti, is considered to have been the king of Urgyen.
