emanations of the Buddha
[分身] ( Jpn funjin )

Also, emanation Buddhas or emanations. Buddhas who are separate manifestations of a true Buddha. According to Mahayana belief, a true Buddha can produce infinite emanations who can simultaneously appear in innumerable worlds in order to save the people there. Hence the phrase "the emanation Buddhas of the ten directions" and other similar expressions that appear in the Lotus Sutra and other sutras. In the "Treasure Tower" (eleventh) chapter of the Lotus Sutra, Shakyamuni summons to the assembly the Buddhas who are his emanations in the ten directions in order to commence the Ceremony in the Air.
