mtshams rgy srung (ma), "Border guardian, is given to those protective deities, who are believed to have their abode at some locality close to the Tibetan border and whose special task it is to prevent hostile foreigners from entering the Forbidden Land. The term gnas srung refers to those deities who guard the holy places of pilgrimage.
